1. To Add a User Override in a Quiz
  2. To Add a Group Override in a Quiz

Quiz Overrides allow instructors to set specific quiz settings for individual students (User override) or groups of students (Group override). An instructor might use an override to provide a student extra time on a test, to allow an extra attempt on a quiz, or to provide access to a quiz on a different day.

User overrides are often used to allow specific quiz settings for students registered with the Paul Menton Centre (PMC).  Group overrides might be used to allow a group of students alternative settings where all the students require the same modification of the settings, such as an extra quiz attempt.

NOTE: For Paul Menton Centre (PMC) students you must use “User overrides” and not “Group overrides”. Using a group override would put the PMC students in a group where the students would be identifiable as such to the rest of the class as PMC students and this is not acceptable from a privacy standpoint.

Quick Video Tutorial: User Overrides (Individual or Group)

To Add a User Override in a Quiz

  1. Log in to cuLearn using your MyCarletonOne credentials.
  2. Click on your course link.
  3. Click on the quiz that you want to override.
  4. On your quiz page, click the Gear icon on the right side of the page.
  5. In the drop-down menu, select User overrides.
  6. Click Add User Override.
  7. To select the student you want to provide the override for either start typing their name in the Search box and select them when they pop up or click the arrow to select the student from the drop-down list.
  8. Change the settings for the accommodations that you would like to apply.
You can set a password to restrict access to the quiz, specify a different open or close time for the quiz, indicate a specific time limit, and/or set the number of quiz attempts.
    Important notes:
Depending on the main exam settings, if you change the Time limit, you may need to change the Close time of the quiz as well by the same amount or the student will be kicked out of the exam at the Close time regardless of what the Time limit is set at.
Please also note that if you disable (uncheck) the Open or Close times for the quiz it will remove any open or close times on the quiz for that student.
  9. Click Save or Save and enter another override.
NOTE: These steps can be repeated for each student that requires overrides.

You will see the settings that were changed from the quiz defaults on the User Overrides summary page.

NOTE: Ignore the message that says “Student does not have the correct group or role to attempt the quiz” when you add a user override. This message will appear only if the quiz is set to be hidden from students.

TIP: If a group of students all require the same override settings, use the Group override menu option to save time on having to set up a User override for each student.
