Carleton University will change our Learning Management System (cuLearn) in 2021. We invite faculty, students and staff to help us determine the best system for the learning community. After a Request for Proposal (RFP) in November, three vendors Blackboard (Learn Ultra), Instructure (Canvas), and D2L (Brightspace) have been shortlisted for review. The university did not receive a proposal from any service provider that offered a Moodle solution. This means that a new LMS will be implemented in 2021. Faculty, students and staff have multiple ways that they can participate in the LMS selection process.
It is important to the university to have faculty, students, and staff involved in the LMS evaluation process. You are the users of the system. There are multiple ways you can contribute to this process. Feel free to engage in some or all of the following:
Teaching and Learning Services is hosting a number of two-hour, in-person sandbox sessions starting on Jan. 24 until Feb. 13.
A sandbox is a testing environment where you can try out an LMS. During these sessions, and with the guidance of TLS staff, you will be able to experience each of the three shortlisted vendors in three different sandboxes and provide your input based on your experiences. For these sessions, you will need to bring a laptop or tablet to participate. We do not have the capacity to provide laptops to participants. Please use the feedback form below to submit your comments, questions and input and please consider formally becoming a system evaluator.
Sorry, all of the LMS In-person “Sandbox” sessions have concluded, but you can still attend the Learning Management System (LMS) Vendor Demos.
If you cannot attend an in-person session, each of the three vendors has provided a special link to their Learning Management System for online sandbox experiences. If you wish to participate online, please fill out the form below to get your usernames and passwords for the systems. Following your online sandbox experience, we would like to hear about your experiences, impressions and questions for the three different systems. Please use the feedback form below to submit your comments, questions and input and please consider formally becoming a system evaluator.
During Reading Week 2020, the LMS vendors will be on campus to do in-person demonstrations. The dates and times of each vendor demonstration are indicated in the table below:
|Vendor and (Product)||Date||Time||Location|
|Instructure (Canvas)||February 18, 2020||1 pm – 4 pm||SA 624|
|Desire to Learn (Brightspace)||February 20, 2020||1 pm – 4 pm||SA 624|
|Blackboard (Ultra)||February 21, 2020||1 pm – 4 pm||SA 624|
You can volunteer to become an LMS evaluator by submitting the form below. Becoming an LMS vendor evaluator requires you to commit to the following:
- Attend at least one sandbox session (as indicated above)
- Attend all three vendor presentations. These vendor presentations are during reading week: Feb 18, 20 and 21 (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; all three days; SA 624). You need to attend all three days to ensure a fair evaluation. If you would like to volunteer as an evaluator, please fill out the form below. Your registration will ensure that you receive up to date announcements and information about the vendor presentations.
Sandbox accounts for each of the three potential systems can be accessed at the links below. Logins and passwords will be supplied during the in-person sandbox sessions or via email request (email to: email@example.com) for online sandbox sessions.
