Research Interests:<\/strong> \u00a0Hip Hop Culture, Popular Music Studies, Digital Media, Informal Learning, Sound Studies, Improvisation.<\/p>\n

Ty Hall is a graduate with an interdisciplinary background in the Cultural Mediations PhD program at Carleton University . His research focuses on the ways hip hop practices have been taken up in Canadian cities for a better understanding of Canada, its people, and the ideas that shape our cultural identities. Under the supervision of Dr. Jesse Stewart, Ty\u2019s research considers the lived experiences of community music facilitators, artists, and activists as an assemblage of microhistories that become a valuable lens for capturing the immense diversity within hip hop culture while emphasizing the idea of multiple local actions that fundamentally make up the broader tapestry of history. His dissertation revisits the formative stages of Ottawa\u2019s vibrant underground hip hop scene, highlighting a multiplicity of flows that illustrate how the culture has been mediated, adopted, and adapted vis-a-vis critique of local and national imaginaries.<\/p>\n
