Xiofan Wu<\/p><\/div>\n

June 2023:\u00a0<\/strong>Congratulations to Cultural Mediations doctoral student Xiaofan Wu<\/strong>\u00a0who, together with co-members of the Shanghai-based Grey Matter<\/strong> research group, was awarded a Sigg Fellowship for Chinese art research!\u00a0Awarded by Hong Kong\u2019s M+<\/a> Global Museum of Visual Art Culture, the fellowship<\/a> \u201csupports new research on Chinese art in dialogue with the M+ Collections.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0The fellowship will support Grey Matter\u2019s 22-23 Undercurrent <\/em>research project, focused on \u201coutlining a feminist narrative of Chinese conceptual art from the late 1970s to mid-1990s \u2026 to present a richer and more diverse picture of China\u2019s development of contemporary art.<\/em> \u201d\u00a0Created in 2022 in Shanghai, Grey Matter<\/strong> is a research group founded by Yun Qiu, Xiaofan Wu, and Luqi Lin, with a research focus on the conceptual practices of Chinese female artists in the last three decades of the 20th century.\u00a0More details on Undercurrent: A Feminist Retelling of Conceptual Practices of Women Artists in Contemporary China<\/em> can be found here<\/a>. Kevin\u2019s doctoral research focuses on the relationship between characters of Asian descent and the practice of racial passing in contemporary\/alternative comic books. Krista Ulujuk Zawadski<\/p><\/div>\n

November 22:\u00a0<\/strong>Congratulations to Cultural Mediations PhD Candidate Krista Ulujuk Zawadski<\/a>\u00a0on being nominated as a finalist for a SSHRC Talent Award<\/a>. Krista is an Arctic anthropologist, curator and Inuk researcher. Her doctoral project focuses on Qatiktalik (Cape Fullerton) as a \u201cnexus of colonial encounters\u201d and offers \u201da (re)interpretation of known history \u2013 written and oral \u2013 through Inuit eyes and voices.\u201d \u00a0Krista\u2019s doctoral research is being supervised by Cultural Mediation professor and Canada Research Chair holder Dr. Carmen Robertson<\/a>.\u00a0Recipient of a Polar Northern Resident Scholarship<\/a> and an Inuit Cultural Repatriation Award<\/a>, Krista is an engaged and prolific Inuk curator, with an impressive body of exhibitions and collaborations spanning the new Inuit Art Centre,\u00a0Qaumajuqat, at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (INUA<\/a><\/em>), The National Art Center (Breaking Ground<\/a><\/em>), Canadian Heritage (Echoing the Land<\/a><\/em>) \u00a0and the Carleton University Art Gallery (Nuvisi: Threading Our Beads at Qatiktalik<\/a><\/em>).Nominations for a\u00a0Talent Award<\/a> are highly prestigious, with only three finalists selected nation-wide, The award recognizes \u201coutstanding achievement by someone who currently holds a\u00a0SSHRC\u00a0doctoral scholarship or fellowship or postdoctoral fellowship\u201c, in areas of academic excellence, research and knowledge mobilization and leadership potential. What a tremendous and well-deserved recognition!\u00a0Titled Unruly Appreciations: How contestation shapes the value of Pharaonic things,<\/a><\/em>Pansee’s\u00a0dissertation focuses on how\u00a0public contestations inform the struggles to repatriate and retain Pharaonic artifacts, from the 18th<\/sup> century to the present day. Jessica Marino<\/p><\/div>\n

August 2022: <\/strong>Cultural Mediations doctoral candidate Jessica Marino<\/strong> was selected for a Fellowship at the Summer Institute on the Holocaust and Jewish Civilization (Holocaust Education Foundation of Northwestern University).\u00a0In the summer of 2022, Jessica was a Fellow at the Summer Institute on the Holocaust and Jewish Civilization of the Holocaust Education Foundation of Northwestern University. This two-week residential fellowship is aimed at emerging and established scholars in Holocaust studies. It offers an intensive and in-depth course to broaden and deepen knowledge of the Holocaust and provides pedagogical training to teach higher education courses related to the field. The fellowship is held annually on the Evanston campus of Northwestern University and taught by well-known Holocaust studies scholars. It covers topics such as, history of the Holocaust, Jewish religion and history, Jewish and US responses to the Holocaust, intermarriages and postwar trials, gender, art history, museums, literature, and film, as well as workshops centered on pedagogical training, such as syllabus development. March 22:<\/strong>\u00a0Jessica Marino, <\/strong>PhD Candidate in the Cultural Mediations program, contributed a lecture to the\u00a0Hear Our Voices: Holocaust Survivors Share their Stories of Trauma and Hate<\/em>\u00a0project\u00a0or HOV. HOV is a bilingual online course that aims to educate students on the Holocaust and Antisemitism by placing the voices of Holocaust survivors at its centre. The project is led by Prof. Deidre Butler, and coordinated by ICSLAC PhD Candidate, Marie-Catherine Allard<\/a>. It has been developed in conjunction with Carleton University\u2019s Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies, Concordia University, The University of Ottawa, Nipissing University and\u00a0<\/em>eCampus Ontario. Accessibility of visual art is a focus of PhD candidate Patricia B\u00e9rub\u00e9\u2019s research. She started by exploring tactile translations of paintings to improve accessibility for visually impaired museum visitors in her master\u2019s program. As part of her PhD in\u00a0Cultural Mediations<\/a>, B\u00e9rub\u00e9 is adding an audio component to help these visitors experience art in their own terms and with autonomy.<\/em><\/p>\n
