{"id":6568,"date":"2024-01-11T15:46:52","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T20:46:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/culturalmediations\/?page_id=6568"},"modified":"2025-03-31T14:53:47","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T18:53:47","slug":"interface-2024","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/culturalmediations\/news-events\/interface-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Interface Graduate Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <\/span><em><span class=\"s2\">Interface <\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\">Conference, launched by the Cultural Mediations PhD cohort in 2004 with the topic &#8220;Cultural Mediations in Theory, Practice and Context,&#8221; remains organized by the program\u2019s second-year students. <\/span><em><span class=\"s2\">Interface <\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\">operates as a uniquely interdisciplinary, collaborative process, from selecting a theme, generating then distributing the Call or Papers, accepting submissions, and all logistics that accompany hosting such an event, including contacting a keynote speaker, scheduling, introducing, moderating and hosting the post-panel Q&amp;As!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The range of Cultural Mediation students\u2019 research areas and expertise results in a dynamic array of focuses, reflected in former <\/span><em><span class=\"s2\">Interface<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\"> conference themes: \u201cEntanglements: Collisions and Tensions,\u201d \u201cReconciliations,\u201d \u201cLiving Stereo: History, Culture, and Multichannel Sound,\u201d \u201cCreative and Critical Approaches in the Digital Humanities,\u201d and \u201cMateriality and Movement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now an integral part of the ICSLAC experience, <\/span><em><span class=\"s2\">Interface<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\"> encourages and allows students to form connections within the department, faculty and broader academic community. At its helm, the drive and passion of ICSLAC students translate directly into innovative topics, experimenting with new forms, even now featuring a publishing opportunity since its 2023 revival. The theme, &#8220;The Cultural Inbetween: Exploring Distinctions Within High, Low and Popular Culture,&#8221; led to the founding of a department-hosted, double-blind peer-reviewed journal, <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><em>Scaffold: Journal for the Institute of Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture<\/em>,<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> which aims to publish two issues a year: a conference proceedings issue for the year\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><em>Interface<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">papers, a nod to its origins, and the peer-reviewed standard issue.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Interface Conference, launched by the Cultural Mediations PhD cohort in 2004 with the topic &#8220;Cultural Mediations in Theory, Practice and Context,&#8221; remains organized by the program\u2019s second-year students.
