Tips to win exam season

It’s that time of year again when we start to hear the dreaded ‘e’ word … EXAMS. But there’s no need to let exams get the best of us. Here’s a handy list of preparation tips so we can get ahead of those nasty exams and show them who’s boss.

1. Give yourself enough time

I know this one is a bit of a giveaway, but it is super important. Giving yourself enough time to study lowers your chances of cramming which, let’s be honest, is not the best approach to studying.

2. Teach others

Explaining your answers to your roommates, family, friends and coworkers will help you get a clear picture of what you need to know for your exam. More importantly, it shows you the areas that need a bit more work.

3. Keep your study space tidy

Do you have enough space to spread out your textbooks and notes? Is your chair comfortable? Do you have enough light? Is your phone out of sight? These are some of the questions you should ask yourself to ensure you feel as comfortable and focused as possible.

4. Take breaks

This tip is very important for both your brain and your mental health. Giving yourself regular breaks not only optimizes your studying capacity, but it also helps for long-term knowledge retention. Remember to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air – Vitamin D is important for a healthy brain!

5. Eat ‘brain food’

Stay away from the chips! Don’t think about eating those cookies. What you eat can have a huge effect on your energy levels and focus. Eating nutritious foods, including fish, nuts, seeds, yogurt and blueberries has been proven to help keep your concentration and memory. Also remember to eat a good meal and drink lots of water on exam day!

6. Plan your exam day

Making sure you get everything ready before your exam will help relieve some of the inevitable stress that comes the day-of. Figuring out what you need to bring and when you need to be there the hour before you start is not helping you keep those stress levels down.
