PSYC 3301 R - Sport and Performance Psychology
How psychological processes influence outcomes across sport and performance environments. Topics may include self-confidence, goal-setting, arousal regulation, imagery, group dynamics, burnout, injury recovery, and how person and situational factors affect the pursuit of excellence.
Prerequisite(s): one of PSYC 2100, PSYC 2301, PSYC 2500, PSYC 2600.
Few domains of human activity receive more attention than the world of sport. Of interest to psychologists is the potential to understand and improve athletic performance but also to promote the enjoyment of sport and exercise activity. This completely online course considers how psychological factors influence outcomes and the pursuit of excellence across sport and performance environments. Topics include self-confidence, motivation and behavioural change, goal-setting, imagery, arousal regulation, coaching and leadership, and group dynamics. This course also examines the psychological characteristics of peak performance, how athletes experience and recover from injuries, and how participation influences physical and mental health. From my perspective, this couldn’t possibly be more fun.
You’ll be working with the course material via a series of guided multimedia modules including brief video segments and active learning exercises. An emphasis will be placed on applying the material to specific situations, including those that are personally meaningful.
Although this is an online course, there will be opportunities to interact with your peers and the instructor. Online courses are obviously different from face-to-face classes and it's up to you to determine if the online learning environment is right for you. The course begins with an opportunity to consider the challenges of completing an online course and what you can do to stay on track.

Instructor: Matthew Sorley
About the instructor: As an instructor with the Department of Psychology, most of my professional activities revolve around teaching. Over the years I've taught a number of courses including introduction to psychology, social psychology, group processes, the practicum course, the old honours essay class, and several first-year seminars. I also developed a course on the psychology of sport and performance and a conference at which honours thesis and project students present posters of their research (the Psychology Undergraduate Event or PURE).
Since 2011, I've been serving as undergraduate chair. I enjoy the role because it provides an opportunity to support students, enhance programs, promote learning and engagement both in and out of the classroom, and work with so many committed members of the Carleton community.
Other enthusiasms include supporting our teachers, training teaching assistants from across the university, and participating in first-year recruitment initiatives. I also enjoy developing and convening events for our undergraduate students including orientation sessions, information sessions, and career panels.
