{"id":356,"date":"2020-07-22T13:21:07","date_gmt":"2020-07-22T17:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/curatorial-studies\/?p=356"},"modified":"2020-07-22T13:34:17","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T17:34:17","slug":"graduate-research-incorporating-youth-perspectives-in-monuments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/curatorial-studies\/2020\/graduate-research-incorporating-youth-perspectives-in-monuments\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Research: Incorporating Youth Perspectives in Monuments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rebecca Friend, a recent graduate of Carleton University&#8217;s Curatorial Studies Graduate Diploma and Public History&#8217;s MA, has had her research highlighted in a recent article written by Taia Goguen-Garner and featured in <em>TheGraduate@Carleton<\/em> newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>Friend&#8217;s research studied how children and childhood have been represented in Canadian commemorations like monuments and memorials.\u00a0Along with this research, Friend also designed a participatory project with a group of children at an elementary school in Montreal where they were asked to design their own monuments to Canadian childhood.<\/p>\n<p>She credits her work in co-curating an exhibition with fellow Curatorial Studies students <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/icslac\/2019\/morsels-of-memory-a-taste-of-ottawas-food-history-march-30-2019-april-11-2019\/\">Morsels of Memory: A Taste of Ottawa\u2019s Food History<\/a> as inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Friend says, \u201cI knew from this experience that working on exhibitions and in the field of public history more broadly was a path that interested me,\u201d shared Friend. \u201cHowever, I found that children and youth were largely excluded from these projects, both as a target audience and as co-producers on the projects.
