New report: Envisioning a Modernized Social and Affordable Housing Sector in Canada
As part of the consultation and discussion around the National Housing Strategy (NHS) there is the beginning of a discourse about building capacity and the need to modernize, reinvent or transform the social housing sector. This paper brief reviews the history of social housing to help determine in what ways the current operating models may be stressed or unsustainable. It then identifies potential steps and incentives needed to encourage or enable change (both among funders and providers) and the associated frameworks, tools and tactics that can address the specific challenges and opportunities facing the new and future stock of affordable housing in Canada.

- Steve Pomeroy, Chris Stoney, Nick Falvo: “Business Transformation: Promising Practices for Social and Affordable Housing in Canada” presented at the Ontario Non Profit Housing Association (ONPHA) and the Australian National Housing Conference in Perth, Australia.
This study involved a literature review on how social housing and other social sector organizations are becoming more entrepreneurial in the face of reduction in public funding. It used a survey of housing organizations across Canada and to identify emerging innovative practice and documented 14 case studies.

A literature review and environmental scan, focusing on the question: “How does the Canadian rental market differ from rental markets in other countries?” It also explores the types of private rental housing programs and initiatives adopted in other countries.
- Steve Pomeroy and Maude Marquis-Bissonnette: ”Review of The Fiduciary Role of Community Boards in a Regulated Environment”, Report produced for the Cooperative Housing Federation (CHF), Ontario Region
This research report examined the scope and role of the boards of co-operative housing, in situations where the funding for the organizations’ operation is provided under some legislated and thus regulated program. The primary focus is on the fiduciary role of the board as trustees for the well-being of the co-operative and its members.

This report was commissioned to update earlier research that had reviewed literature prior to 2010 on the linkages between housing and a broad range of non-housing outcomes covering five subthemes of non-housing outcomes: health, family stability, crime, education, and labour market participation.

- Steve Pomeroy and Sarah Phoney: ”Adding to Rental Supply: Review of International Policies and Programs”, Report produced for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)
The objective of this research was to identify and assess existing policies, initiatives, tools, approaches and financing models adopted by other countries to encourage rental housing supply. This included both market and social rental approaches and covers six countries: Australia, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand, the UK and the UK.
