The website footer appears at the bottom of every page on your site and provides visitors with important information such as contact details, office locations, and links to commonly accessed resources.

Because the footer is displayed site-wide, updating it in one place automatically updates it across the entire website.

The footer is often one of the last places visitors look when searching for information, making it an important part of your site’s overall navigation and user experience.

What Can Be Managed in the Footer?

Depending on your site’s configuration, footer settings may include:

Department or unit name

Mailing address

Building location

Phone number

Email address

Website links

Call-to-action buttons

Because this information appears throughout the site, it should be reviewed regularly to ensure accuracy.

Accessing Site Options

Footer content is managed through Site Options.

To access Site Options:

From the Dashboard, select Appearance → Site Options.

Review the available fields.

Update the information as needed.

Save your changes.

The updated information will automatically appear throughout your website.

Contact Information

The footer is typically used to display key contact information for your department or unit.

Examples include:

Department name

Office location

Phone number

Email address

Website URL

This information helps visitors quickly find ways to contact your team.

Footer Buttons

Many sites can also display one or more call-to-action buttons in the footer.

These buttons can link to:

Important internal pages

Forms and applications

Service requests

External websites

Department resources

Examples include:

Contact Us

Apply Now

Request Support

Visit Our Department

Buttons should be used for actions that are important to a broad audience across the entire website.

Choosing Effective Footer Links

Footer buttons should support tasks visitors commonly perform.

Good examples:

Contact Us

Request Support

Make a Donation

Visit Our Programs

Less effective examples:

Links to rarely visited content

Temporary campaign pages

Content relevant to only a small audience

Remember that footer links appear on every page of the site.

Best Practices

Keep Contact Information Current
Review contact information regularly and update it whenever staff locations, phone numbers, or email addresses change.

Use Clear Button Labels
Visitors should immediately understand where a button will take them.

Good Examples:

Contact Us

Apply Now

Visit Our Programs

Avoid:

More Information

Include Only Important Links
Because footer content appears on every page, focus on the information visitors are most likely to need.

Review Changes on the Front End
After updating Site Options, visit your website and confirm that the footer displays correctly.

<figure class="wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube class="wp-block-paragraph">Hello and welcome to module 3 of our Advanced cutheme training series. This video is about your website’s footer.

The footer is the bar of content that appears throughout your website near the bottom just above the menu. It usually contains your department’s contact information. Here’s an example on our documentation site.

To customize your footer, go to the back end and then from the navigation go to Appearance and Site Options. Here you will see options for location, contact, and buttons.

Under Location, select your department. Choose your building and optionally you can enter the room number.

Under Contact information, enter your telephone number and your email address.

Under Buttons, you have the option to add two buttons – a red and a white. You just click Select Link and you paste your URL in there. You can change the text here and also you have the option of opening that link in a new tab.

From the front end, here are the two buttons that we have on our site – one that links out to resources and the white button that links to our main website for Web Services.

Once you have filled out all the information in the back end just make sure to click Update to save your changes.

Try it Out!

Practice updating your website footer.

Open Appearance → Site Options.

Review the current footer information.

Update the department name or contact details.

Add a red button and a white button.

Save your changes.

Visit your website and review the updated footer.

Manage site-wide contact information, footer links, and call-to-action buttons through Site Options.

[66
post-881","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","cu_page_type-intermediate-training-module-4
["GET
