Mohammed Jahirul Islam

Mohammed Jahirul Islam is a doctoral student in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada. He is also an Associate Professor and former Chairman of the Department of Criminology and Police Science, School of Life Science, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) at Tangail. Before joining the MBSTU faculty, he was employed as a research officer at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). Moreover, Mr. Islam was a guest lecturer in sociology at Bangladesh Open University and also in the master’s program at Bangladesh Police Staff College. He received his M.S.S. degree in sociology from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in 2009. Mr. Islam has written several research articles on theoretical and historical criminology, the philosophy of science, punishment, female criminality, gender issues, terrorism and fundamentalism. He is currently working an edited book entitled ‘Crime, Criminology and Criminal Justice in Bangladesh: A Comprehensive Reader’ (in Bengali) and several academic articles on contemporary social movements, positivism and political crime. Mr. Islam is a member of many intellectual communities, including the Canadian Law and Society Association, the Bangladesh Sociological Association, the Bangladesh Institute of Crime and Justice Studies, and the Bangladesh Criminological Society.
