Bachelor of Data Science<\/h2>\n

The insights of data and analytics influence our everyday lives, from streaming service algorithms to the life altering decisions made by science, industry and government. Data Science combines the practical application of mathematics, statistics, computer science and analytics. It is the study of how to extract value from captured or simulated data to infer knowledge from patterns.<\/p>\n

In our data-driven world, there is a clear need for individuals from this field who can think analytically, creatively and leverage AI and big data to aid in decision-making. Learn to synthesize and apply statistical and computer science skillsets to ethically extract knowledge and insights from data. The Data Science program has a basis in data wrangling, inferential statistics, analytics, AI, big data and data ethics.<\/p>\n

Why choose the Bachelor of Data Science over the current Bachelor of Computer Science?<\/a><\/dt>

<\/p>\n

The Bachelor of Data Science focuses more on the analysis of data, AI, and machine learning. For data scientists, the focus is on analysis and interpretation of data that can be used in real-world applications in areas such as business, chemistry, health, and many others. The main task is not developing software, but rather using software to interpret data. Computer Scientists solve a problem through development of software.<\/p>\n

What types of Masters programs can a Bachelor of Data Science graduate pursue?<\/a><\/dt>

<\/p>\n

You can apply to many of the programs available to a student that has completed the Bachelor of Computer Science, including graduate programs like the Master of Computer Science<\/a> and the Master in Data Science, Analytics, and AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Concentration in Statistics was designed to provide a pathway for students wishing to continue into a Masters in Statistics<\/a> at Carleton or other universities.<\/p>\n

Are there any international opportunities to study abroad?<\/a><\/dt>

<\/p>\n

Carleton University offers an Exchange Program with approximately 110 partner institutions in more than 30 countries around the globe. This is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to study full-time at a partner institution for a single term (fall or winter) or for a full academic year. Participating in an exchange is an incredibly rewarding experience, as this is a chance to truly immerse yourself in a new culture, experience your academic subject through a new lens, and develop intercultural skills (which are increasingly valuable to employers).<\/p>\n

Is it possible to transfer to a Mathematics and Statistics or Computer Science degree after the first year of BDS?<\/a><\/dt>

Changing into Computer Science or a 15.0 credit degree in Mathematics, Computer Mathematics or Statistics are options. Please see an undergraduate advisor<\/a> to discuss the specific details.<\/p>\n

Why do we not have a course plan for BDS students?<\/a><\/dt>

<\/p>\n

Course plans are often needed in programs that are very structured. The BDS program requirements are flexible and students may select their own course plan as they progress. Please consult your undergraduate advisors for help with course planning.<\/p>\n
