The School for Studies in Art and Culture invites applications for a preliminary appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning 1 July 2022, from qualified candidates engaged in studies of Music and Culture. We especially encourage applications from music scholars with expertise in one (or more) of the following areas: critical race studies, gender and sexuality, decolonization, music theory, creative practices (e.g., composition, performance, improvisation, production, etc.), and technology and media.
The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses at all year levels in their area of specialization as well as other aspects of the Music curriculum. The candidate will also be expected to teach MA-level seminars and to supervise MA student research. Carleton Music faculty have opportunities to supervise PhD students on music-related topics in cognate programs at Carleton, such as Cultural Mediations and Indigenous and Canadian Studies.
We encourage applications from candidates from groups underrepresented in Music studies, with experience in mentoring students from such groups.
About the Academic Unit
Carleton University’s Music program is located within the School for Studies in Art and Culture, which also houses undergraduate and graduate programs in Film Studies and Art and Architectural History. The Music program offers a BA in Music, a BMus (with performance studies in jazz, classical, musical theatre, popular music idioms, or traditional musics) and an MA in Music and Culture.
Faculty members have research expertise in multiple fields, with an emphasis on ethnomusicology, music theory, popular music, music and technology, and performance studies. For more information, see https://carleton.ca/music
The position requires a PhD or equivalent, with evidence of an active commitment to innovative research as reflected in peer- reviewed publications and the potential to develop an externally-funded, high quality research program. The position also requires a demonstrated level of excellence in teaching as well a commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in the discipline and on campus.
