Since the earliest days of Russian colonialism, migration and transnationalism have been important tools of resistance and struggle, as Crimean Tatars have used their de-territorialization as a resource and tool to strengthen their attachment to their homeland and collective memory. As a result of these repeated colonizations throughout history, Crimean Tatars have had to leave their homeland and form diaspora communities in Turkey, Europe, and North America. This workshop will seek to understand the intersections between indigeneity, forced migration, and transnational activism. In particular, we will explore the impact of displacement in shaping both the self-understandings, subjectivities, and positionalities of Crimean Tatars and examine sites where transnationalism has facilitated the processes of ethnocultural justice, identity construction, institutional formation, and global activism. The workshop will bring together scholars and practitioners from Ukraine, Turkey, Canada, Germany, the United States, Austria, and Poland.

The full list of panelists, as well as the presentation abstracts can be found here.

Event agenda

Monday, May 5, 2025

9:30 AM – 3:00 PM (EDT)

3:30 PM – 9:00 PM (CEST)

4:30 PM – 10:00 PM (EEST)

9.30-9.40 AM.
