{"id":651,"date":"2016-04-06T06:30:19","date_gmt":"2016-04-06T10:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/diversity\/?p=651"},"modified":"2016-04-06T06:35:25","modified_gmt":"2016-04-06T10:35:25","slug":"lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/diversity\/2016\/lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Lecture on &#8216;Work-Life Balance: Rhetoric versus Reality&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">Hosted by Carleton&#8217;s\u00a0Women in Science &amp; Engineering Network,\u00a0<em><strong>Linda Duxbury<\/strong><\/em>, from the\u00a0Sprott School of Business will be talking on\u00a0<em><strong>Work-Life Balance: Rhetoric versus Reality<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><em>Date: Thursday April 14, 2016<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><em>Time: 1:00 pm<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><em>Where: \u00a0Multi-Media Lab (Room 482) MacOdrum Library<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This talk draws on Dr. Duxbury&#8217;s\u00a0extensive research in the area of work-life balance, supportive managers, supportive work environments and managing change. \u00a0It begins by \u00a0providing evidence that work-life balance and stress have increased over the past 20 years while employee well being has declined. The talk then turns to an examination of why such changes have occurred. \u00a0The following factors are considered: demographic changes in the workforce, lack of action on the part of employers, increased workloads, office technology, \u00a0and organizational culture. \u00a0 The next section of the talk answers the question: \u201cwhy do organizations need to make it easier for employees to balance work and life?\u201d \u00a0Key reasons discussed include impending labour shortages, the need to recruit and retain employees, and the costs of inaction. \u00a0This is followed by the identification of specific \u00a0recommendations on how companies can increase balance. \u00a0The talk concludes with a discussion of what employees can do themselves to increase their sense of control over the work-life boundary.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><em>Light refreshments will be served.
