The Almonte Lectures are now being organized by Warren Thorngate<\/p>\n

Now approaching our twelfth season, the Almonte Lectures have come about from a conversation in January, 2004, between Reiner Hollbach and Don Wiles, during which it was suggested that such a series might arouse favourable response in the Almonte area.\u00a0 The model could be the “Learning in Retirement” series at Carleton University.\u00a0 The idea was talked around some and met with such positive response that it was immediately put in place. The first lecture was held in the Almonte Library on Friday, 27 February.\u00a0 Hoping for an audience of twenty or\u00a0 so, the lecture was to be held in the classroom off the main library.\u00a0 Ten minutes before starting time the audience kept pouring in, so it was decided to move to the main area of the library, with everyone carrying a chair.\u00a0 Before long there were nearly a hundred people ion the audience.\u00a0 The projection system worked well, and the audience was well satisfied.\u00a0 Subsequent lectures have been in the United Church Hall in Almonte, and have been equally successful.<\/p>\n
How do we choose our speakers?:\u00a0 For the present, while we are still in an experimental stage, we want to\u00a0be very selective in our choice of speakers.\u00a0 We want experienced speakers who are well known for being able to engage their audiences. Clearly they must be authorities in their fields, and be able to speak convincingly on topics that will be interesting to our audiences.\u00a0 Within limits, we choose the speaker and let the speaker suggest the topic.<\/p>\n
Again, at least for the early stages of our Series, we want to steer away from highly subjective topics such as religion, politics, personal life-style philosophies and others.\u00a0 When we gain more experience and momentum, we\u00a0can perhaps\u00a0be more experimental.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We welcome your comments and your recommendations.
