Contract instructor teaching by Ph.D. students in a given year will be limited to a small number of opportunities. To be qualified for one of these opportunities, students must (a) be well-advanced in the Ph.D. program and be making good progress towards completion, (b) be recommended to the Chair directly by both their primary thesis supervisor and the Ph.D. Supervisor, and (c) for an initial contract, be recommended to the Chair directly by at least one instructor for whom they have been a teaching assistant. It is to be understood that the foregoing are strictly necessary conditions for being awarded a teaching contract—i.e., there is no guarantee that every student who satisfies them will be hired. Student applications for Summer- and Fall-Winter-session teaching should be submitted to the Chair in early-to-mid-November of the preceding calendar year and mid-to-late-January of the preceding academic year, respectively.
