Welcome to the EDC’s fully online Orientation for Contract Instructors!

Below you will find a series of resources — links to videos, relevant websites and resources, and more — that will help you prepare to teach at Carleton this term. Please be sure to review these materials in advance of the face-to-face Orientation session via Zoom on Thursday, August 13th, 5:30-8:30pm (registrants will receive more details about where and how to join this meeting). The virtual face-to-face session will be a space for you to ask any follow-up questions that the materials below raised for you, and/or any questions that weren’t addressed in these resources (for efficiency, we will not be repeating information in the live session that is already provided below). So, peruse these materials at your leisure and take note of any questions you’d like to discuss during the synchronous session.

This webpage is structured to connect you with the information you need, in the order you need it.

  1. It begins with a series of videos and resources that focus on Policies and Procedures information you will want to consult as soon as possible.
  2. The next section provides videos and resources that will help you to prepare for Teaching Online, with a focus on both your educational technology options and different strategies for online teaching
  3. The third section connects you with some other existing Services, Resources, and Training Opportunities that you can take advantage of to help you in making the transition to teaching online this term.
  4. The final section features two separate lists of Resources for Instructors and Resources You Can Direct Your Students To. While most of the information here is just to make you aware of what’s out there and how it can help you/your students, some offices have also contributed Introduction videos for you by of introductions.

Policies and Procedures

Below are three recordings (roughly 1 hour total) by Morgan Rooney (EDC) that address some essential policies and procedures that all Carleton instructors need to be aware of, plus copies of the slides and links to some relevant resources:

Teaching Online: Strategies, Technologies, and Resources

The first resources are TLS’s Transitioning to Online Teaching webpage, along with our handy Online Teaching Resource Guide. These resources provide a high-level overview of some of the most relevant supports and services available to you as you prepare to teach in the online environment.

The second resource below is a collection of 6 short “jump start” videos (roughly 45 mins total) created by Dr. Anne Trepanier (School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies) and Maristela Petrovic-Dzerdz (EDC). These are jam-packed full of some excellent “big picture” tips for teaching online, and are specifically designed to help instructors facing the challenge of teaching online for the first time.

The final two resources are brief introductory videos by Elspeth McCulloch (EDC) and Maristela Petrovic-Dzerdz (EDC) that explore some crucial issues in online teaching, with a specific focus on the Carleton context and the educational technology tools that are institutionally supported. The first recording features an overview of the most relevant technologies you should be considering for your class(es). The second provides an overview of some specific strategies and tools on cuLearn that you can use to communicate with and otherwise engage your students. The third features an overview of some top tips and considerings for online teaching not addressed in the other videos.

Campus Resources for You & Your Students

Carleton has many resources to support faculty and students, and so one of the big challenges is just learning about what everyone else on campus is doing and how they might be of help to you and/or to your students. Below is a curated list of resources that it is especially important for Carleton’s contract instructors to be aware of. Each listing includes links, contact information/details, and other relevant resources (such as readings or videos that partner offices on campus have created for this occasion).
