Active Learning Classrooms: Space and Pedagogy Converge

Where you teach has an inescapable impact on how you teach. When it comes to creating an active learning environment, your learning space is among your most important considerations yet simultaneously, it is one for which you often have the least control. Are the seats and/or desks mobile or not? Are there multiple writing surfaces that students can use? Does the room have an obvious “front of class”? The answers to these questions shape and, in part, determine what you can and can’t do in terms of activities.
In this session, representatives from the Educational Development Centre (EDC) and Instructional Media Services (IMS) will facilitate a conversation among peers to help you think about what types of activities you can use in the types of classrooms you usually teach in. We’ll also give you a sneak peek into the kinds of classroom updates that are in store for upgrading and improving Carleton’s existing learning spaces.
