Welcome to My Classroom: Emotional Learner: Practices to Emotionally Support Students

November 15, 2019 at 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM

Location:404 Dunton Tower

Facilitator: Ali Ayra (Associate Dean, FGPA, and Associate Professor, School of Information Technology)

Learning is a social and emotional process. Just like any other person, our students have emotions and emotional reactions that affect their academic performances. They feel pride and joy, fear and frustration, trust and appreciation, and anger and disappointment. How can we see them not as learning machines but as human beings with feelings that need recognition, understanding, and accommodation? And how do we incorporate that understanding into our academic plans?

In this interactive conversation, the participants share their successful practices for providing a more emotionally supportive environment for students. The facilitator, Ali Arya (Associate Dean, FGPA, and Associate Professor, School of Information Technology), will review some of the practices collected from Carleton and other universities while inviting participants to discuss other practices. The discussions of this workshop will be compiled into a package to be presented at an EDC workshop on October 10, together with a review of theoretical approaches and research results.

Space is limited, so please register here in advance – and don’t forget to pack a lunch!
