Getting Started with Zoom

December 15, 2020 at 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM

Facilitators: Greg Allison (Media Production), Rajiv Bhola (EDC), Jenna Stidwill (COL/EDC)

Participants: This session is intended for individuals who have limited experience with Zoom (beginners).

Zoom is a web conferencing platform that can be used for a variety of online-based meetings, presentations, events, and academic purposes (including teaching!).

These training sessions will focus on a tour of Zoom’s user interface and the basics of how to use Zoom’s in-meeting controls. We will walk participants through each tool step-by-step, including:

  • Scheduling a Zoom session
  • The difference between Host (instructor) and Participant (student) controls
  • Different options for view settings
  • Audio and Video settings, including muting/unmuting mic and camera
  • In-meeting security tools
  • Screen-sharing for PowerPoint presentations and other visual aids
  • Using a variety of non-verbal feedback tools with your students
  • How to start a Breakout room*
  • How to run a Poll*
  • Chat functions

Note: This session is a brief introduction to these features, not an in-depth review.

Participants will walk away from this session with an understanding of Zoom’s functionality, how to schedule meetings, and the ability to use the various buttons within Zoom sessions.

This session will also prepare participants to attend our Zoom for Teaching Online session, which explores the pedagogical strategies you can employ within Zoom to enhance your online teaching.

Note: This session is planned to run for 1.5 hours. The facilitators have booked 2 hours to accommodate overflow, extended Q&A, and individual consultations.
