Incorporating Effective Online Activities and Communication Strategies into your Course

Due to high demand for the workshop, the format has been changed to a “flipped” model. What this means is that you will watch four content videos (see below) on your own time and then you will have the option to register in a live discussion session after you have completed the videos.

Therefore, your two options for this workshop are:

  • Option 1: Watch the videos at your own time (you will not register for the session)
  • Option 2: Watch all four videos at your own time then register for a live session to take part in the discussion about the activities described in the videos. You will have an opportunity to submit your questions/comments before the session.Workshop content videos:

In the first part of this online session, we showcased several “best-selling” engagement and communication online activities created in cuLearn, which have been successfully applied in many Carleton courses, and we discussed pedagogical principles behind them. Video includes:

  • Synchronous online meetings

  • Online discussions
  • Checking the student “pulse”

In the second part of this session, we continued showcasing engaging online learning activities that have been successfully applied in many Carleton courses, and we discussed pedagogical principles behind them. Video includes:

  • Weekly learning responses
  • Online sharing activities
  • Quizzes for learning
  • Transforming live lecture into an online lesson
  • “Path to success in your course”

 Session description:

Digital technologies enable us to provide a variety of learning and communication opportunities. Additionally, they allow us to reach out to and actively engage course participants, and to frequently gauge students’ progress in an effective manner.

In this session, we showcase several “best-selling” engagement and communication online activities created in cuLearn, which have been successfully applied in many Carleton courses, and we will discuss pedagogical principles behind them.

By the end of this session, you will:

  • Become familiar with several effective online activities, underlining pedagogy and facilitation strategies
  • Reflect on which activities and facilitation techniques you might want to refine or add to your teaching tool kit

This is part of Course Design Fundamentals, offered by TLS. Participants who complete five workshops and a guided reflection of the experience will receive a letter of completion to include in their teaching dossier. If you want this workshop to count towards the program requirements, and you watched all videos but will not participate in the live session, please contact maristela.petrovicdzerdz@carleton.ca
