Welcome to My Online Classroom – with Sophie Tamas
March 3, 2021 at 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM
Presenter: Sophie Tamas, School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies / Department of Geography and Environmental Studies
Welcome to My Online Classroom is a workshop series led by instructors, for instructors, with a specific focus on sharing a wide variety of ideas, strategies, and approaches to teaching online. The sessions will begin with a brief overview from the presenter, and then open for question-and-answer and discussion more broadly. The idea is to create spaces where instructors, regardless of experience, can exchange ideas for teaching online.
This particular session will be led by Dr. Sophie Tamas, an Associate Professor cross-appointed to both the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. Sophie has been developing creative approaches to teaching online that aim to reduce student isolation. In undergraduate courses, her methods include heavily-illustrated weekly letters to her students full of stories and relevant hyperlinks, lab activities that involve studying and responding to the community impact of COVID-19, and reading journals in cuPortfolio. In her graduate seminars, she takes a collaborative approach to both teaching and assessment using Google docs and Zoom. In this session, Sophie will be sharing ‘lessons learned’ about online teaching so far and providing insight into how her undergraduate and graduate students have received the changes she’s been implementing in her courses.
Space is limited. Please register in advance by filling out the form below.
