Both methane and black carbon are short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), such that reducing source emissions offers the opportunity for immediate term climate benefits in stark contrast to the challenges of CO2 mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>Measurements from an array of techniques and researchers have consistently shown higher methane emissions than anticipated by current inventories, and hint at a range of measurement, reporting, and regulatory challenges.\u00a0 Measuring Methane news story<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1060 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eerl\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_EDF_smaller_map_sized-1-400x239-1-400x239.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eerl\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_EDF_smaller_map_sized-1-400x239-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eerl\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_EDF_smaller_map_sized-1-400x239-1-160x96.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eerl\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_EDF_smaller_map_sized-1-400x239-1-240x143.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eerl\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_EDF_smaller_map_sized-1-400x239-1-360x215.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Johnson\u2019s research presentation underscored the need to treat flare and vent mitigation holistically \u2013 a focus on venting or flaring alone is likely to have unintended consequences (i.e. reduced venting via increased flaring). The seminar also discussed the increasingly important role of black carbon in international emission reduction agreements, climate science, and health effects and how this can be a lever to drive mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>Carleton\u2019s Energy and Emission\u2019s Research Lab (EERL) and the FlareNet Network continue to benefit from a strong research partnership with the World Bank\u2019s \u2013 Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership program.
