Exactly 33 years ago today, a man walked into a classroom at \u00c9cole Polytechnique de Montr\u00e9al (the university\u2019s faculty of engineering) and brutally murdered 14 women in a horrific act of gender-based violence. This act shook our nation to its core and in response, the Government of Canada designated December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ever since, Carleton University has come together to remember the women that were killed on December 6, 1989 and reflect on ways we can eradicate gender-based violence in our community.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking Action Against Gender-Based Violence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Following two years of commemorating White Ribbon Day online, Carleton\u2019s Faculty of Engineering and Design returned to holding an in-person remembrance ceremony, gathering in the university\u2019s new Engineering Design Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carleton\u2019s President and Vice-Chancellor, Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering<\/a> Professor Cynthia Cruickshank and Robin Feeney, a Carleton Student Engineering Society<\/a> councilor, spoke to the Carleton community about what December 6 means to them and actionable steps we can take to foster a safe space where everyone feels that they belong.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince this tragedy took place, an incredible amount of progress has been made towards eliminating barriers faced by young women and girls in pursing their interests in science, technology, engineering and math,\u201d said Professor Cynthia Cruickshank. \u201cBy working together, we can collectively build and sustain healthy learning for all.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
