<\/span>That <\/span>is <\/span>the <\/span>question on everyone\u2019s mind when it comes time to apply for <\/span>university<\/span>. <\/span>To help high school students and their <\/span>familie<\/span>s<\/span> who are interested in an engineering or design program<\/span> make an informed decision, Carleton University brings <\/span>the classroom<\/span> right to <\/span>your<\/span> doorstep.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discover Engineering and Design<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n


\nEarlier this year, <\/span>Carleton University\u2019s <\/span>Faculty of Engineering and Design h<\/span>eld<\/span> our<\/span> Discover Engineering and Design event in Mississauga<\/span> to showcase our diverse programs, student projects, co-op\/internship <\/span>opportunities<\/span>, and support systems to prospective undergraduate students. <\/span>The event <\/span>is more intimate than a <\/span>university f<\/span>air, where attendees can talk one-on-one with current students, professors, and instructors<\/span>. Attendees <\/span>a<\/span>re also encouraged to <\/span>interact with projects\u2014like sitting i<\/span>nside ou<\/span>r student-built race car<\/span> or <\/span>driving <\/span>our micro-rover<\/span>\u2014<\/span>that they <\/span>could work<\/span> on if they chose to <\/span>study at<\/span> Carleton.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Diverse Range of Programs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With <\/span>various<\/span> programs in<\/span> engineering, architecture and urbanism, industrial design, and information technology<\/span>, <\/span>there\u2019s<\/span> something <\/span>for everyone<\/span>.<\/span> At Carleton,<\/span> w<\/span>e support students <\/span>along their <\/span>journey to picking a program <\/span>by<\/span> helping them learn about all the opportunities <\/span>within Carleton\u2019s community<\/span> that align with their interests. <\/span><\/span> <\/span>

<\/span>In addition to our general programs, Carleton offers specialized programs that <\/span>help students <\/span>stand out when they enter the workforce. Employers are looking for graduates with a background in the core <\/span>discipline<\/span>, reinforced by a unique specialization that can be used to tackle current and emerging challenges<\/span>.<\/span>  <\/span>A great example<\/span> is Sustainable and Renewable<\/a> Energ<\/span>y Engineering, a program uniquely offered at Carleton which <\/span>provides<\/span> students<\/span> fundamental kn<\/span>owledge in<\/span> either<\/span> mechanical or electrical engineering <\/span>but specializ<\/span>es those skills to the sustainable and renewable energy sector<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“<\/span>Applying to u<\/span>niversity is one of the most pivotal moments in a person\u2019s <\/span>life,\u201d says<\/span> Larry Kostiuk, the Dean of<\/span> the Faculty of Engineering and Design.<\/span> \u201cBy organizing events like Discover Engineering and Design, we are helping<\/span> high school students and their families <\/span>fill in the blanks. <\/span>Have an<\/span> interest in <\/span>biology<\/span> and engineering<\/span>? <\/span>Carleton<\/span> h<\/span>as<\/span> a program for that. <\/span>Interested in de<\/span>signing <\/span>adaptive and accessible technology? <\/span>Carleton<\/span> also ha<\/span>s<\/span> a program for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Preparing for the World of Tomorrow<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

At Carleton, our professors and instructors have strong ties with industry and government organizations. Often, guest lectures and off-campus visits are organized to show students how what they are learning in the classroom is connected to real-world challenges. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\nTake for example, a team of architecture students who brought their class project to reality with the help of their professor and the support of local organizations. The problem? Food insecurity in an Ottawa neighbourhood. The solution? A community fridge and pantry, built by the students over the course of a summer<\/span><\/a>. Now fully functional to the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I like about my program is the flexibility to explore different interests\u2014whether that\u2019s through a class project or through the student group I volunteer with,\u201d says Koralie Mokam, a biomedical and electrical student and a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society, CUBES. \u201cI\u2019m encouraged to learn by doing, in addition to being taught theories and concepts. I know when I was a high school student, I didn\u2019t think my university experience could be this hands-on.\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
