Through Carleton\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/architectural-conservation-and-sustainability-engineering\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering program<\/span><\/a>, she found a way to combine these passions into one degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering program exists to meet the growing need for engineers with expertise in heritage conservation and sustainable buildings, and is a joint collaboration between the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The robust curriculum includes learning about building design, construction, analysis and assessment, all while collaborating with architecture students to provide real-world application.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI&#8217;m interested in structural analysis and design because they make the buildings that we see every day,\u201d says Kang, who began her BEng in 2018. \u201cIt&#8217;s really fascinating to learn how buildings are built and how they are calculated precisely to be made stable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-34039 size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"934\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/63\/P_CarletonPhotography_CEE_210623-132-1400x934.jpg\" alt=\"Arch Eng - (HODI) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Awards in Built Heritage Conservation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Photo by CIMS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">She would work part-time during her studies and full-time during the summer at the multi-disciplinary research lab that integrates digital technologies into non- or semi-digital workflows with industry partners. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cGoing to site is one of the most enjoyable parts of the job,\u201d says Kang, \u201cwhere I can survey sites with tools like total station and laser-scanning drones to make 3D modeling.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In Ottawa, her work took her to various historic properties, including the Alexander Fleck House at 593 Laurier Ave. West, which was built in 1902, and the Prince of Wales Bridge.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAlthough I saw videos on how to use a total station or just basic laser scanning, I feel like getting actual hands-on experience and doing it myself really helped me to learn. In 2022, the studio shot a TV interview with CBC\/Radio-Canada to outline their Parliament Hill restoration work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"design-building-competitions-are-experience-accelerators\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Design-Building Competitions are Experience Accelerators<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kang&#8217;s degree not only provided her with invaluable opportunities available to students within the Carleton community, but to participate in a variety of external competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThose [competitions] really made a difference to my education. I really encourage other students to participate in these extracurriculars in university.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last fall, Kang participated in the ninth annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/timberfever\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TimberFever<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Design-Building competition in the fall, organized by Toronto Metropolitan University. Photo provided by Abi Kang.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt isn\u2019t just a static stop, but also a dynamic structure that reflects its surroundings,\u201d says Kang. \u201cThis multipurpose space serves as a bike stop, a bus stop, and a shelter for people seeking refuge.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kang was also able to go to Seattle in October 2023 to compete at the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apti.org\/student-design-build-competition\">Association for Preservation Technology Preservation Engineering Technical Committee (PETC) Student Design-Build Competition<\/a>, where teams of students built a masonry arch out of different materials.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"building-a-sustainable-career\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building a Sustainable Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Now, as a graduate of the program, Kang says she is able to speak the language of architectural conservation, something that Carleton specializes in. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI feel like we get to have exposure to working with different groups of people, and work on various projects,\u201d she says. \u201cA lot of these projects reflect how the real world works: scheduling, creating estimates, planning out the work, collecting the data, compiling and organizing it, creating 3D modelling based on it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">She graduated in December and is considering different opportunities to explore the civil side of her degree.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI now have the option to go either way,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you&#8217;re passionate about heritage conservation and sustainable building design, the Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering program might be the perfect fit for you.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph Mathieu Abi Kang had always liked math and science\u2014but she was interested in architecture too.
