Toronto-based Tanya Geisler\u2014a successful leadership coach, writer, teacher and podcast host\u2014introduced herself as no stranger to the feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am a reluctant expert on the imposter complex,\u201d said Geisler. \u201cNo matter how well I did in different areas of my life, I would often chalk it up to luck, fluke, timing, or having somehow managed to convince people that I was smarter, more capable than I actually was.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Over a 20-year coaching career, she\u2019s seen it affect people across all sectors and genders. Each one seemed stuck in a similar way: all their successes were due to outside factors and all their failures were due to their own faults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data is still insufficient, said Geisler, because studies skew North American and English. The development of the concept largely excluded the effects of systemic racism, classicism, xenophobia and other biases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut who experiences imposter complex the most? It disproportionately affects those in underrepresented, systemically excluded or marginalized groups,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workshop Day was created to give women students\u2014including racialized women, women with disabilities, and Indigenous women\u2014a chance to practice soft skills and polish their resumes. There are the social, cultural and parental expectations\u2014not to mention the pressures that young women put on themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in Geisler\u2019s expert opinion, feeling negative feelings toward oneself is actually a good sign. Simply put, they show that a person really cares. More boldly, Geisler asked her audience, \u201cwhat if these traits are your leadership edge?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you a people pleaser? That means you want everyone to feel included. If you always compare yourself to others, you are good at connecting the dots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for all the perfectionists out there? Not because of \u201cflukes\u201d or dumb luck, but because of hard, persistent work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018You\u2019re not ready,\u2019 is the number one lie that imposter complex tells.
