At the time, the city was&nbsp;emerging&nbsp;as a hub for telecommunications and research, with&nbsp;institutions&nbsp;like Bell-Northern&nbsp;Research&nbsp;and the Communications Research Centre offering rare access to industry,&nbsp;government&nbsp;and&nbsp;academia&nbsp;in one place.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially planning to&nbsp;stay&nbsp;only a few years before pursuing a PhD in the United States, Wight quickly realized the opportunities in Ottawa were unmatched.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had the run of the private sector,&nbsp;government and&nbsp;the university,\u201d he says. \u201cSomewhere else, I would have just been a grad student&nbsp;in a lab.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He stayed, completed his&nbsp;doctorate&nbsp;and&nbsp;joined&nbsp;Carleton as a professor in 1976.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"building-bridges-between-the-classroom-and-industry\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building bridges between&nbsp;the&nbsp;classroom and industry<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his career, Wight has prioritized connecting&nbsp;students&nbsp;with real-world experience. Long before co-op programs became standard, he&nbsp;connected&nbsp;graduate students directly with companies across Ottawa.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He describes it as a \u201cwin-win-win\u201d model: students gain experience, companies assess potential&nbsp;hires&nbsp;and universities&nbsp;strengthen&nbsp;industry ties.&nbsp;That approach also helped him grow one of the largest graduate research groups in his field, with students&nbsp;contributing&nbsp;to active projects in telecommunications, satellite&nbsp;systems&nbsp;and radar technologies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"cu-section cu-section--white w-screen ml-offset-center px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><div class=\"cu-max-w-child-5xl space-y-6 md:space-y-10   cu-prose-first-last\"><figure class=\"cu-figure not-prose  max-w-full\"><div class=\"not-prose overflow-hidden bg-white shadow-lg max-w-full rounded-none\"><div class=\"relative none overflow-hidden w-full pb-[56.25%] border border-cu-black-100\"><iframe title=\"Videos Embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OUKvzpBhQpY\" class=\"cu-embed-iframe\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"from-professor-to-entrepreneur\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From professor to&nbsp;entrepreneur<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside&nbsp;his academic career, Wight founded or co-founded five startups, blending research with commercialization.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His first company, Cal&nbsp;Corporation, grew&nbsp;to 600 employees, while another,&nbsp;IceFyre,&nbsp;reached a valuation of $50 million.&nbsp;In&nbsp;each case, Carleton supported his entrepreneurial work,&nbsp;while ensuring&nbsp;his teaching and research responsibilities remained strong.&nbsp;&nbsp;Wight\u2019s experience navigating both&nbsp;academia&nbsp;and industry gave him a unique perspective.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMost engineers specialize in one level,\u201d he explains. \u201cI work at both the system level and the circuit level.&nbsp;That\u2019s&nbsp;part of why&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;been able to build companies.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>He also&nbsp;witnessed&nbsp;the volatility of the tech&nbsp;sector firsthand, including near-successes and sudden collapses driven by market forces beyond engineering itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere&nbsp;was&nbsp;the Nortel meltdown,\u201d he reflects.&nbsp;\u201cI remember being at a major trade show in Barcelona, and Nortel had this huge booth.&nbsp;One year later, there was no Nortel. Every year I update them.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;always incremental, but&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;constantly bringing in what\u2019s new, so students are learning the latest developments as they happen,\u201d he adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Despite decades of change, his teaching style&nbsp;remains&nbsp;deliberately&nbsp;traditional. \u201cI\u2019m chalk and talk,\u201d he says. \u201cNo slides.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The approach resonates with students. His upper-year courses consistently draw high attendance, a rarity in large&nbsp;lecture&nbsp;settings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"adapting-to-a-changing-field\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adapting to a changing field<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Wight began his career, computers were not part of everyday academic life. Students relied on punch cards and waited hours or days for results.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I came to Carleton, we&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;have computers; we had card decks.&nbsp;You\u2019d&nbsp;punch them on these big machines, take them over to the&nbsp;Admin Building, and wait a day for them to run your file. It was like&nbsp;the&nbsp;Dark&nbsp;Ages. It&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;until the 1980s that we were&nbsp;sort of forced&nbsp;to have PCs, and even then, there was almost no power in these machines,\u201d he shares.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, engineering education is shaped by software, artificial&nbsp;intelligence&nbsp;and rapidly evolving tools.&nbsp;&nbsp;While he&nbsp;acknowledges&nbsp;the benefits of&nbsp;new&nbsp;technologies, he&nbsp;remains&nbsp;cautious.&nbsp;&nbsp;He believes one constant&nbsp;remains: the need for strong&nbsp;analytical&nbsp;thinking and problem-solving skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"lessons-from-50-years\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lessons from 50 years<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Across teaching, research and&nbsp;entrepreneurship, Wight emphasizes persistence over talent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo achieve anything, you&nbsp;have&nbsp;to do it one brick at a time,\u2019 he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He encourages students to stay&nbsp;committed&nbsp;even when projects become&nbsp;difficult, rather than shifting direction too quickly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPeople who leave when things get hard don\u2019t achieve much,\u201d he adds. \u201cYou have to put your head down and grind.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Wight is\u00a0optimistic about the future of Carleton\u2019s engineering\u00a0programs\u00a0and\u00a0he\u00a0remains\u00a0committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation.\u00a0After 50 years, that curiosity\u00a0and growth mindset\u00a0continue to define both his career and his impact on Carleton\u2019s engineering community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Story by Alejandra Fernandez, video by Nicholas Arcuri After five decades at Carleton University, Department of Electronics Chancellor\u2019s Professor Jim Wight still walks into the classroom with the same energy that first brought him to Ottawa in the early 1970s.
