Interim Dean – Dr. Ron Miller<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Ron Miller began his role as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED) on August 1, 2025, for a one-year term. Ron Miller grew up in Winnipeg, eventually completing a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba (1993). He has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University (1997) and was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University (1997-1998). After a brief time as an Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, he joined Carleton\u2019s department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 2001, eventually serving as Chair of the Department from 2016-2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His research focusses on how structures, processes and behaviours at very small scales control the large-scale behaviour of engineering materials. He attempts to bridge the gap between physics, chemistry, and materials science, bringing together often disparate scientific communities and theories to create new insights into the engineering performance of materials. Working with his students and international collaborators, he has co-authored more than 75 peer-reviewed journal articles and published two graduate level textbooks with Cambridge University Press. He was recently promoted to the rank of Chancellor\u2019s Professor in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has been an Invited Professor at EPFL in Switzerland (2013-2014), a Visiting Researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Grenoble, France (2006), a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG), France (2007), and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Technion (IIT), Haifa, Israel, (2004).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
