If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these competitive awards can provide you with financial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The USRA positions are funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)<\/a>, with additional positions funded by the Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"overview\"><strong>Applications are particularly encouraged from Indigenous and Black student researchers, for whom there is additional funding from NSERC. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row-reverse mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 60%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h2 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-2xl md:text-3xl lg:text-4xl lg:leading-[3rem] pb-4 after:w-8 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Overview \n                    <\/h2>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                            \n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The duration of the award is 14 to 16 weeks on a <strong>full-time<\/strong> basis (35 hr\/wk) between May 1 and August 31.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>USRAs may be held during co-op placements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total award value is dependent on the duration of your research, the contribution from your supervisor, and any supplemental earnings. The hourly rate of the minimum award value equates to the province\u2019s minimum wage. For more details on the expected salary, please see the <a href=\"http:\/\/ph\">Award Value<\/a> section.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"deadline\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deadline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants must submit their completed application package in the form by <strong>4:00 pm on Tuesday, February 17, 2026<\/strong>. <em>Please note that applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See <a href=\"#anchor-6\">How to Apply<\/a> for more details.<\/p>\n\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n                    <div class=\"cu-textmedia-bgimg flex-1 rounded-xl bg-no-repeat bg-cover \" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/63\/DSC01627_cole_madeline-scaled_2243x1705_acf_cropped.jpg); background-position: 50% 50%; transform: scale(1);\"><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"supplements\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Supplements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\"><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">The following supplemental awards are available to students who are granted a USRA:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"fed-supplement-to-carleton-students-graduating-who-pursue-a-master-at-carleton\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">FED Supplement to Carleton students graduating who pursue a master at Carleton<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton undergraduate students who will be graduating in April 2025 and are applying to pursue your graduate studies in the Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton University starting in September 2025, may be eligible for an additional $2,500 to their USRA funding. Please note that this is contingent upon you continuing your graduate studies in the Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton University starting in September 2025.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"fed-supplement-for-edi-focused-research\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">FED Supplement for EDI focused research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>FED wants to encourage and support students and faculty members who incorporate Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in their research by offering up to 10 supplemental awards of $1,000 for NSERC or FED USRA students in FED.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be considered for this supplement, you must submit a PDF document that outlines how EDI will be incorporated in the undergraduate research assistant\u2019s own project or how the project of the undergraduate research assistant will support a larger research project that has EDI considerations overall. This proposal document should be half a page long (Times New Roman, 12pt, single spacing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the conclusion of the research project, students must submit an additional document, due by August 31st. This end-of-project report will be a 1-page submission (Times New Roman, 12pt, single spacing) reporting the success of the project with the following format:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research Project Summary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training Activities Completed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EDI within the Research Project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EDI in the Research class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canadian Forest Sector Workforce Diversity undergraduate supplements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$5,000 supplement to NSERC USRA recipients (up to 30 available per year)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Objective: Promote research opportunities in areas relevance to National Resources Canada (NRC) \u2013 Canadian Forest Sector (CFS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications will be automatically considered by NSERC if proposed project falls within areas of relevance (no separate application is necessary)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" Stimulate research in this area, encourage and support interest, promote training of potential future graduate studies and employment at ECCC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must apply directly to ECCC by August id=\"how-to-apply\"><strong>A) Students\u2019 instructions: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students apply through the Faculty and Department\/Unit where they request to hold their award (the supervisor\u2019s Faculty, not necessarily the student\u2019s).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The internal deadline for the Faculty of Engineering and Design is 4:00pm on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Find a supervisor \u2013 interested students should approach faculty members whose research matches their interests and ask them to support their application for USRA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Fill out an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/OnlineServices-ServicesEnLigne\/Index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NSERC application<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The student fills out and submits Form 202-Part I.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please see\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Onlineservices-servicesEnLigne\/instructions\/202\/USRA-BRPC_eng.asp#Part_I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u202ffor comprehensive instructions on filling out Part I.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attach a copy of your Carleton Transcript with the grading legend (the back page).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Note: An official version of the transcript is requested, but unofficial transcript can be used for the application process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forward the reference number provided by the system to their potential supervisor(s) \u2013 this is required to link Parts I and II.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After supervisor fills out Part II, students should check the NSERC site to ensure application shows that <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"eligibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"student-eligibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Eligibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>To be eligible to apply for an award, you must:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or Protected Person as of the application deadline,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be registered, at the time of application, in a bachelor\u2019s degree program at an eligible institution (students from other institutions may apply),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have registered in at least one of the two terms preceding the award,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have completed all the course requirements of at least the first year of university study (or two academic terms) of your bachelor\u2019s degree, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have obtained, over the previous years of study, a CGPA of at least B- (7.0) (this is a competitive adjudication process).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may hold only one USRA per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31), and a maximum of three USRAs throughout your university career.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students can register in a maximum of two courses during the tenure of the award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Who is not eligible?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Those currently enrolled in an undergraduate professional degree program in the health sciences (e.g., MD, DDS, BScN)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students who have already held 3 USRAs during their undergraduate career<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students who have already held a USRA during the current academic year (Fall 2025 \u2013 Summer 2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Projects which do not lie within the NSE fields (Please refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/NSERC-CRSNG\/Eligibility-Admissibilite\/students-etudiants_eng.asp\">NSERC\u2019s Eligibility criteria<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students who have already graduated (at the time of the application deadline)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"project-eligibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Eligibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NSERC-USRA projects must lie within the natural sciences and engineering fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CIHR-USRA projects must primarily improve or have an impact on health and\/or produce more effective health services and products and\/or strengthen the Canadian health care system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SSHRC-USRA projects must be primarily in the social sciences and humanities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summary: the subject matter being researched, however, must fall under the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.gc.ca\/site\/science\/en\/interagency-research-funding\/policies-and-guidelines\/selecting-appropriate-federal-granting-agency\">mandate of the relevant council<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"supervisors-eligibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supervisor\u2019s Eligibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any faculty member authorized by the institution to independently supervise students in the natural sciences or engineering fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supervisors must meet the following minimum contributions per USRA student, using NSERC or any other research or faculty-approved funds:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$3,917.60 for 14 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$4,626.05 for 15 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$5,334.40 for 16 weeks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A limit (2) on the number of USRA applications that each faculty member can endorse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"award-value\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Award Value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Salary Expectations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The hourly rate of the minimum award value equates to the province\u2019s minimum wage ($17.60\/hr).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>14 weeks x 35 hours\/week = 490 hours at $17.60\/hour = minimum amount of $8,624.00 minus mandatory source deductions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15 weeks x 35 hours\/week = 525 hours at $17.60\/hour = minimum amount of $9,240.00 minus mandatory source deductions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>16 weeks x 35 hours\/week = 560 hours at $17.60\/hour = minimum amount of $9,856.00 minus mandatory source deductions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supplemental awards are also subject to mandatory employment deductions, and may be paid at the end of the work-term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3
