{"id":822,"date":"2018-07-04T10:00:03","date_gmt":"2018-07-04T14:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/its-cuthemedev1.carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/?page_id=822"},"modified":"2026-03-19T08:51:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T12:51:35","slug":"changing-your-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/current-students\/undergrad-academic-support\/changing-your-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing Engineering Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Changing Engineering Programs\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineering students who have attained <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/current-students\/undergrad-academic-support\/understandingprereq\/\">second-year status<\/a> and have a minimum CGPA of 5.00 can access to the <em>Change of Program Elements<\/em> (COPE) form in Carleton Central. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineering students can use the COPE form to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>change majors within the BEng program (ex: Civil to Electrical), or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>declare or change a program stream (for Aerospace, or Software engineering), or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>declare a minor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NOTE: Starting May 2026, the mechatronics engineering program <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">will<\/span> accept transfers from current engineering students<strong> (25FA Admit term only) <\/strong>into the program.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"timelines-for-submitting-your-change-of-program-elements-request\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timelines for Submitting your Change of Program Elements Request<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective March 15, 2026 the following timelines for COPE requests for all Engineering programs will apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Change Effective For:<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Fall Term<\/th><th>Winter Term<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Summer Term<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">COPE Open\/Processed<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">May 1 &#8211; June 20<\/td><td>October 1 &#8211; November 20<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">February 1 \u2013 April 1<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Submitting a COPE request during these time periods will ensure students with approved requests will have time to consult with their new program advisor in advance of peak registration periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Note:<\/span> any requests submitted outside of the time periods stated above will not be answered until the next COPE processing period opens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"requirements-for-change-of-program-elements-requests\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements for Change of Program Elements Requests<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With the exception of first-year AERO students&#8217; stream selection; Change of Program Elements requests are evaluated based on merit (CGPA) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span> the number of spaces open in the program requested at the time of submission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changing engineering programs is never guaranteed.&nbsp; It is based on available space which changes year to year, and available spaces are offered to students in order of decreasing CGPA until programs are full.&nbsp; It is possible that in a given year no changes will be granted to a program if it is full.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Please <\/strong><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">contact the <\/strong><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\"><a href=\"mailto:engacadsupport@carleton.ca\">Engineering Academic Support Office<\/a> to confirm eligibility criteria <strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">for the engineering program you are seeking to change into<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students can contact the program advisor of the program they&#8217;re interested in changing into if they have questions about how it would impact progression\/status<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"important-notes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Notes:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Please be certain about your COPE change request before you submit a request<\/strong> &#8212; once a COPE request is submitted and if approved, it will be automatically applied &#8211; there is no option to revert back to your previous program (a new COPE request will be required).  Do not submit a COPE request until you are certain you want to proceed with the program change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Until a Change of Program Elements request is approved, engineering students will be limited to register in courses included in their <em>current<\/em> degree program requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When a Change of Program Elements request is approved, students will be subject to the rules, regulations and degree requirements in the <em>new<\/em> catalog year. Catalog year appears at the top of the academic audit, which can be run in Carleton Central.&nbsp; For questions or clarification about which catalog year to follow, please contact the <a href=\"mailto:EngAcadSupport@cunet.carleton.ca\">Academic Support Office<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For general information on the process for applying to change your program, please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/registrar\/program-elements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Registrar\u2019s Office Change of Program Elements<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"adding-a-minor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding a Minor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineering students are permitted to add a minor to their degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For advising on minor requirements, please contact the Department offering the minor you\u2019re interested in. A Departmental Advisor list can be found via the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/academicadvising\/departmental-advisors-a-z\/\">Academic Advising Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note: because Engineering programs include no \u201cfree electives\u201d, adding a minor (which all include 4.0 credits of course requirements) will extend how long it takes you to complete your degree requirements (engineering major and minor included).
