In the winter term of 2021, while still under the constraints of the pandemic, students from English and Architecture collaborated on a project called Soliloquies, Sonnets, and Selfies (part 3): Objects are closer than they appear. Using fragments of text from Shakespeare’s plays Othello, Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, and King Lear Grad and Undergrad students in Architecture worked with Undergrad students in English to develop a performance-based project. Under the guidance of Yvan Cazabon in Architecture and Janne Cleveland from Drama Studies, the Architecture students were responsible for the design of the production and worked with the English students to create the dialogue around the theme of dysfunctional families, a trope around which Shakespeare’s works excel. Complicating the project was the fact that the three student actors/creators were working on the collaboration remotely. Imagine what we can do when we are working together in person again!
