ENGL 1010 [0.5 credit]: Writing Essays about Literature (Fall and Winter)
An intensive writing course focusing on the formulation and construction of a literary essay.
Lectures three hours a week.
Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in the appropriate discipline.
Teaching Competence: Candidates must demonstrate previous teaching experience in the subject area of introductory English literary studies and composition studies.
Other Relevant Experience: Candidates should have recent scholarly publications (within the last 5 years) in English literary studies.

ENGL 1020 [0.5 credit]: Effective Writing (Fall and Winter)
The rhetorical principles, skills, and structures necessary for the kind of writing done at the university level. Clear and effective composition as a mode of research, discovery, analysis, and persuasion. Open to students from all disciplines.

ENGL 2011 [0.5 credit]: Children’s Literature / CHST 2011 [0.5 credit]: Children’s Literature (Fall)
An introduction of the critical study of children’s literature.
Lectures three hours a week.

Teaching Competence: Candidates must demonstrate evidence of teaching experience in the field of children’s literature.
Other Relevant Experience: Candidates should have scholarly publications within the field of children’s literature.

ENGL 2104 [0.5 credit]: Drama Workshop (Fall)
(The course will be delivered off-campus, in Ottawa, at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre.)
A course dealing with the rudiments of theatrical performance: voice, movement, improvisation, interpretation. Exercises are based upon examples drawn from classical and contemporary repertoires.
Includes: Experiential Learning Activity
Workshop three hours a week.
Required Professional Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must have extensive professional experience in the theatre, either acting or directing, for at least 10 years, in theatre productions at the local and national level (Stratford, National Arts Centre, etc.).
Teaching Competence: Candidates must have experience teaching drama workshops in a University.
The modality of this course is determined by the University (in-person, online, or hybrid). In the event public health authorities impose public health restrictions, part or all of this course may need to be delivered online as required by the University and as directed by public health authorities.
ENGL 2901 [0.5 credit]: Writing Poetry (Winter)
A workshop involving regular assignments in writing poetry and practical criticism based on this work. Permission to register in this course requires the student to submit a portfolio. Instructions can be found at Carleton.ca/English.

Workshop three hours a week.

ENGL 3414 [0.5 credit]: Introduction to Professional Writing and Editing/ALDS 3414 [0.5 credit]: Introduction to Professional Writing and Editing (Winter)
The fundamental skills of professional writing and editing, including writing for specific audiences, document design, revision strategies, copyediting.
Lectures three hours a week.
Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in the appropriate discipline.
Teaching Competence: Candidates must demonstrate teaching experience at the university level.
Other Relevant Experience: Candidates must demonstrate experience in professional writing.

ENGL 3500 [0.5 credit]: Literatures and Cultures 1700-1900 (Fall)
A study of the period between 1700-1900, with attention to cultural, historical, geographical, and literary contexts.
Lectures three hours a week.
Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in the appropriate discipline.
Teaching Competence: Candidates must demonstrate previous teaching experience in the subject area of literatures and cultures that emerged from any geographical region between 1700 and 1900.
Other Relevant Experience: Candidates should have recent scholarly publications in English literary studies.

ENGL 3608 [0.5 credit]: Topics in Theatre Management (Fall)
(The course will be delivered off-campus, in Ottawa, at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre.)
A workshop taught by practitioners in the community that provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to create, manage, and sustain theatre projects. Topics will vary but may include the development of children’s theatre or the operation of a festival or touring company.
Workshop three hours a week.
Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates should hold an MA or MFA in the appropriate discipline.
Teaching Competence: Candidates must demonstrate previous teaching experience in the subject area of Theatre and/or Arts Management.
Other Relevant Experience: Candidates must have experience teaching drama or theatre at the university level or equivalent.

ENGL 3902 [0.5 credit]: Writing Screenplays / FILM 3902 [0.5 credit]: Screenwriting Workshop (Fall)
An intermediate workshop involving regular assignments in writing for stage and/or film.
Prerequisite(s): a 2000-level creative writing workshop or permission of the instructor. Permission to register in this course requires the student to submit a portfolio. Instructions can be found at carleton.ca/english.

A course dealing with techniques of characterization, principles of ensemble performance, scene analysis for actors and directors, styles of performance.

Required Professional Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must have extensive professional experience in the theatre, either acting or directing, for at least 10 years, in theatre productions at the local and national level (Stratford, National Arts Centre, etc.).
Teaching Competence: Candidates must have experience teaching drama workshops in a University.

ENGL 4135 [0.5 credit]: Studies in Publishing (Winter)
Topics will vary from year to year.
Seminar or lecture three hours a week.
Topic for 2022-23: This course is an experiential learning opportunity for students to design, edit, produce, and promote a literary magazine featuring the work of writers from Carleton and beyond. Students will use both digital publishing tools and traditional print-making techniques in the MacOdrum Book Arts Lab to produce a professional-quality literary journal.
Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must have professional experience in literary magazine editing, including familiarity with digital publishing software and platforms, and book design.
Candidates should have an MA in an appropriate discipline, or MFA, or higher degree.
Teaching Competence: Previous university teaching experience, or as professional trainer, is an asset.
Other Relevant Experience: Familiarity with local and national literary publishing scenes is an asset.

ENGL 4605 [0.5 credit]: Theatre Production Seminar (Winter)
(The course will be delivered off-campus, in Ottawa, at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre.)
This course offers students advanced engagement with the theory and application of theatrical crafts and includes participation in a writing, acting, or technical capacity on a class production.
Includes: Experiential Learning Activity
Seminar three hours a week.
Required Professional Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must have extensive professional experience in the theatre, either acting or directing, for at least 10 years, in theatre productions at the local and national level (Stratford, National Arts Centre, etc.). Experience creating original, site-specific theatre is an asset.
Teaching Competence: Candidates must have experience teaching drama workshops in a University.
The modality of this course is determined by the University (in-person, online, or hybrid). ENGL 4915 [0.5 credit]: Advanced Writing Workshop (Fall)
