The Department of English Language and Literature is proud to announce the following competitions that are being held across the Department. We look forward to your submissions!

Submit your Creative Writing to Carleton’s Newest Literary Magazine!

Sumac Literary Magazine is a brand new magazine for all Carleton creative writers. Whether you are a Carleton student, staff, or faculty member, we encourage you to submit your work for consideration. Fourth-year students in ENGL 4135B will be editing and producing the magazine next winter under the guidance of Instructor Chris Johnson, managing editor of Arc Poetry Magazine. Sumac Literary Magazine will be published online, and Issue 1 will be launched in the spring. The submission guidelines are available on the English Department’s Creative Writing page. The deadline to submit is December 31, 2022.

The 2022-23 Annual Drama Competition is now open!

This year’s theme or writing prompt is “Caring for the Earth”. We are currently hearing a lot of talk about a climate crisis and how that is or will affect each of us. With that in mind, what does “caring for the earth” look like? What is our relationship to the earth and to each other in this context? If you could wave a magic wand, what issue related to caring for the earth would you eradicate? If you were to create a climate superhero, what powers would that person have and how would they use them? Submissions can be short screenplays, radio plays, scenes, or one-act plays and must be no longer than 5 pages, with a limit of 3 submissions per person. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2022.Any student registered in an undergraduate English course may submit to english@carleton.ca.

Carleton English Literature Society Logo Design Contest

Calling all artists and graphic design wizards! We are looking for someone to create a logo to represent our society!

This competition is open to all members of the Carleton English Literature Society. If you have not yet completed the New Member Form, we will not accept your submission. While we appreciate all interest in submitting, our goal is to adopt a logo that represents the creativity within the club.

The guidelines for creating a logo are only that you include “English Literature Society” OR simply the letters “ELS”, and to please avoid any copyrighted and/or inappropriate images. Once all submissions have been collected, there will be a poll to decide the winner. The winning entry will be announced on January 9, 2023, and will be featured on our social media and all our promotional materials! Please email your logo design to our secretaries Ayla and Lauren at carletonenglitsociety@gmail.com.

Deadline: December 31, 2022. We look forward to seeing all your designs!
