The English Department at Carleton is a warm and vibrant community of students and faculty with interests that range from literary classics to contemporary writing, popular culture, and digital media. While pursuing their studies, our students will get to experience a departmental culture that prioritizes intellectual debate about literature and is dedicated to connection-building between students and between students and faculty. Interested in creative writing, editing, and publishing? In/Words Magazine & Press was founded in 2001 by Professor Collett Tracey and a team of her students. It has since evolved into a family of magazines, a chapbook press, and a monthly reading series.

Since 1985, the Department of English has organized this prestigious event, which invites internationally acclaimed authors and scholars to Carleton. Past speakers include: Michael Ondaatje, Elizabeth Hay, Paul Muldoon, Eden Robinson and Christian Bök.
A number of awards for poetry and essay-writing are awarded annually to undergraduate students. The winners of the essay contests are chosen from among a pool of exceptional essays submitted by instructors in the Department of English at the end of each academic year.
