Applications are invited for an entry-level permanent full-time tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor cross appointed with the Institute for Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science and the Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University. We are interested in candidates who will investigate climate change mitigation or adaptation strategies from an earth science perspective, and are particularly interested in candidates focused on water related issues.
Possible areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, the effects of climate change on groundwater resource quantity or quality, hydrogeological aspects of renewable energy development and storage, impacts of climate change on Northern and other water resources, or the relationship between climate change and global hydrologic systems and/or hazards (e.g., floods, extreme weather). Applicants must be able to teach undergraduate courses in Earth Resources and Environmental Hazards, and Physical Hydrogeology. This position will augment existing teaching and research strengths within the Faculty of Science and provide research leadership in this emerging area that has much scope for cross-faculty collaboration.
About the Academic Unit
The Institute for Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science (https://carleton.ca/ieis/) is a student-centred undergraduate teaching unit with close connections to a variety of academic units. The Department of Earth Sciences (https://earthsci.carleton.ca/) has a vibrant graduate program and engages in diverse research related to earth sciences. Although the primary appointment would be with the Institute, the successful applicant would have a 33% cross- appointment to the Department of Earth Science which is where their grad students would be based.
The undergraduate curriculum in both programs is innovative and involves many opportunities for students to participate in understanding and solving real-world problems through field courses, practicum courses, group projects and undergraduate research.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and demonstrated excellence and commitment to teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate-level students. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program in climate change adaptation and mitigation from an earth sciences perspective. In addition to a strong grounding in hydrogeology, candidates should have a strong foundation in the use of traditional earth science tools (e.g., geochemistry, mineralogy, petrology) complemented with a broader multidisciplinary approach within the natural or social sciences.
Applicants with the ability to forge collaborations with members of the Institute and the Department of Earth Sciences and interdisciplinary-oriented faculty across the university, as well as with allied agencies, will be given preference.
