Which is why the organization approached Carleton University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/bennett-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bennett Lab<\/a>, whose researchers specialize in supporting environmental decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>Their ensuing collaboration \u2014&nbsp;an approximately $2-million project funded by the NCC,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Environment and Climate Change Canada<\/a>&nbsp;and an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/innovate-innover\/alliance-alliance\/index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NSERC Alliance grant<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;has spawned a new digital tool,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ncc.carleton.ca\/login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sites<\/a>, that uses artificial intelligence software and prioritization algorithms to take some of the guesswork out of the complex conservation process.<\/p>\n<p>Sites is an open-access platform that can be used for free by any organization or government agency that\u2019s involved in conservation, including Indigenous communities and non-profit land trusts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenges we face are so big and daunting, we need to be as efficient as possible when we try to protect natural spaces and biodiversity,\u201d says Carleton environmental scientist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/joseph-bennett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Bennett<\/a>, the lab\u2019s principal investigator.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75688\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75688\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bennett-1200w.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bennett-1200w.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bennett-1200w-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bennett-1200w-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bennett-1200w-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bennett-1200w-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bennett-1200w-200x113.jpg 200w\" alt=\"Prof. Joseph Bennett leans on a counter in the Health Sciences Building.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Joe Bennett<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese are some really hard choices to make, but now the NCC and others can look at maps and input all of the data they have, and our tool will help them determine which places to protect and what approaches to use.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sites does not remove people from the equation, Bennett is quick to point out. There\u2019s still a human element to these decisions; the tool only provides support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been breaking down the dichotomy between academic research and practical, applied products,\u201d says Bennett. \u201cOur partnership with the NCC has led us in a new direction. Our group publishes papers all the time, but the reason most of us go into this career is to try to make a difference in conservation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ncc-app-sites-1200x680-1.jpg\" alt=\"An open field in Staley Point, Wolfe Island, Ontario\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"u-block u-block--full\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"u-block u-block--white\">\n<div class=\"u-width-small\">\n<h2>Democratizing Conservation Planning<\/h2>\n<p>The NCC began working with Carleton in early 2020, and the desire to standardize and \u201cdemocratize\u201d conservation planning was central from the start, says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.richard-schuster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Schuster<\/a>, a former Bennett Lab postdoctoral researcher who became the NCC\u2019s Director of Spatial Planning and Innovation in April 2021<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_85869\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85869\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/richard-schuster-225x230-1.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/richard-schuster-225x230-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/richard-schuster-225x230-1-200x204.jpg 200w\" alt=\"A portrait of a man in a blue shirt with glasses and long blonde hair.\" width=\"225\" height=\"230\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Schuster<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to be a programmer or highly skilled technician to use this tool,\u201d says Schuster.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou can map out different scenarios based on complex datasets and make informed decisions fairly quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government officials, conservation managers and forestry company representatives can meet for a day to discuss a parcel of land, for example, and come away with an agreement that maximizes habitat and wildlife protection. Because priorities can vary \u2014&nbsp;say, maintaining water features, or protecting endangered birds \u2014&nbsp;a flexible platform that can integrate all of the relevant data is essential.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs you scale up the amount of land, these decisions become much more complicated,\u201d says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/jaimie-vincent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaimie Vincent<\/a>, a Carleton master\u2019s graduate who is now the Bennett Lab\u2019s research manager.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou need to see the whole picture when planning for the future, and you need to know what to do \u2014&nbsp;and where to do it \u2014&nbsp;to get the optimal solution considering your constraints.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_85878\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85878\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-schoenrock-225x225-1.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-schoenrock-225x225-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-schoenrock-225x225-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-schoenrock-225x225-1-200x200.jpg 200w\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Research Computing Services manager Andrew Schoenrock<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Carleton postdoctoral researcher&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/jeffrey-hanson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Hanson<\/a>&nbsp;was the lead developer of the tool, with support from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/rcs\/people\/andrew-schoenrock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Schoenrock<\/a>&nbsp;and his team in the university\u2019s Research Computing Services unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted Sites to help people understand the spatial context of their data and results,\u201d says Hanson. \u201cThe greatest strength of the tool is that is provides an interactive and spatially explicit environment for identifying priority areas for conservation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also aims to make it easy to understand and compare different solutions, with interactive graphs that show various performance statistics.
