Carleton Sexual Assault Support Centre Presents:
Emma Sulkowicz: artist, activist
Carleton University Sexual Assault Support Centre is pleased to announce that Emma Sulkowicz will be giving a presentation to our campus community on Friday, March 10 from 7-9 pm in Minto 5050. A Columbia University graduate, Ms. Sulkowicz is perhaps best known for Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight), a work of endurance performance art which she conducted as her senior thesis at Columbia.
The piece involved Sulkowicz carrying her 50 lbs. university issue mattress whenever she was on Columbia University property in an act of protest, art and activism. Her effort commenced in 2014 and concluded at her graduation ceremony in May 2015 when Sulkowicz carried her mattress across the graduation stage. Sulkowicz’s protest was the result of her experience with sexual violence on campus property, “rape can happen anywhere. For me, it happened in my own dorm bed. And since then that space has become raw for me, and I feel like I’ve carried the weight of what happened there with me everywhere since then.” – Sulkowicz, Columbia Spectator video interview; September 2, 2014. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9hHZbuYVnU
