Homophobia/heterosexism presents itself in many different forms. The following are some of the ways in which it might be manifested.

Verbal:

  • Derogatory or offensive remarks, anti-gay jokes, anecdotes, or slurs (including derogatory nicknames)
  • Name calling, insults, or slurs of a homphobic or transphobic nature
  • Unwelcome comments about a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity
  • Negative stereotypes about gays, lesbians, bisexual or two-spirited individuals
  • Jokes that are homophobic or reinforce stereotypes
  • Mocking or imitating a person’s manerisms

Non-Verbal:

  • Written harassment, including e-mail messages, that target an individual or group on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity
  • Websites that promote the inferiority of homosexuals
  • Pamphlets that espouse hatred of homosexuals
  • Homophobic graffiti
