While the university has taken several steps towards Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) through initiatives such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/edi-plan\/\">EDI Action Plan<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/accessibility-institute\/accessibility-strategy\/\">Coordinated Accessibility Strategy <\/a>working towards an inclusive community is an ongoing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/\">Indigenous Gathering Site<\/a> to learn more about Indigenous community engagement, teaching, learning and research, news, stories, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"monthly-observances\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monthly Observances <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"january\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">January<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">January 27: International Holocaust Remembrance Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>January 27 marks the day the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated. On this day we honour the memory of the victims of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/jewishstudies\/holocaust\/\">Holocaust<\/a>&nbsp;and take this opportunity to reflect on the dangers of anti-Semitism and the atrocities of the Holocaust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">January 29: National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 29 we remember the six people who lost their lives and the 19 others who were injured during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/news\/2021\/01\/the-government-of-canada-intends-to-create-national-day-of-remembrance-of-the-quebec-city-mosque-attack-and-action-against-islamophobia.html\">2017 terrorist attack at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Qu\u00e9bec in Sainte-Foy<\/a>. This day serves as a reminder of the work that is needed to eradicate hate Islamophobia, as well as recognize the resilience and strength of Muslim communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"february\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">February<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Black History Month <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As a community, we reflect on our histories and pasts during&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/black-history-month\/\">Black History Month<\/a>&nbsp;to better understand where we are today. Throughout the month of February the Carleton community comes together to support and celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black people and their communities. Learn about Carleton\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/equity\/black-inclusion\/\">commitment to Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">February 1-7: World Interfaith Harmony Week <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/interfaith-harmony-week\">World Interfaith Harmony Week<\/a> is observed every year in the first week of February. Emerging from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution, this week-long celebration aims to promote harmony between citizens of the world, regardless of their faith. Together we must all celebrate unity in diversity, and the connection between people and their faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"march\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">March<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">March 8: International Women&#8217;s Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/international-womens-day\/\">International Women\u2019s Day,<\/a>&nbsp;observed annually on March 8, Carleton celebrates the achievements and contributions of women across the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women continue to experience discrimination based on their gender, which is exacerbated for racialized women, women with disabilities, transgender women, and those with marginalized gender identities. Collectively, we celebrate women\u2019s achievements to raise awareness about discrimination and create a world that is equitable and inclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">March 15: International Day to Combat Islamophobia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/anti-islamophobia-day\">International Day to Combat Islamophobia<\/a>&nbsp;is observed every year on March 15 with the goal of creating concrete action in the face of rising hatred, discrimination, and violence against Muslims. This day calls attention to people around the world who are harassed, detained, imprisoned, or even killed for identifying as Muslim, practicing Islam, or converting to Islam. As a community, we commit to protecting individual\u2019s right to freedom of religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">March 21: International Day to End Racial Discrimination <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/federal-anti-racism-secretariat\/international-day-elimination-racial-discrimination.html\">International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination<\/a>, the Carleton community reflects on the injustices and prejudices fueled by racial discrimination that take place every day. This day serves as a call to action for individuals, organizations, and all levels of government to actively work to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination, injustice, systemic racism, and hate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">March 31: International Day of Trans Visibility<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-national-defence\/maple-leaf\/defence\/2024\/03\/international-transgender-day-visibility-opportunity-honour-transgender-community.html\">International Transgender Day of Visibility<\/a>, the Carleton community comes together to celebrate transgender people and raise awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide. Today and every day, we work to eliminate barriers and create an environment that is equitable and inclusive for all gender identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"may\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">May<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Asian Heritage Month <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each May, Carleton celebrates&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/asian-heritage-month\/\">Asian Heritage Month<\/a>. With many distinct regions and communities making up the Asian diaspora in Canada, this month provides an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the diverse contributions of Asian Canadians to the growth and prosperity of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Carleton community is proud to highlight and celebrate the stories, contributions, and impact made by people of Asian descent on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Jewish Heritage Month<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>May has been recognized in Canada as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ccdi.ca\/media\/3416\/20220419-en-educational-resources-on-jewish-heritage-month.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jewish Heritage Month<\/a>&nbsp;since March 2018 after a unanimous vote in the House of Commons:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/acts\/C-18.4\/page-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Jewish Heritage Month Act<\/a>. The intention is to remember and honour the contributions of Jewish people that have made a difference to Canadian lives and to educate future generations about the role that Jewish Canadians have played and continue to play in communities across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton is proud to honour these stories, recognizing the bravery and resilience that Jewish communities have continuously shown throughout Canada\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">May 5: National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People Day &#8211; Red Dress Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>May 5 is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/crown-indigenous-relations-northern-affairs\/news\/2025\/05\/ministers-anandasangaree-hajdu-and-guilbeault-issue-statement-on-red-dress-day-2025.html\">National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Peoples<\/a>&nbsp;(MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+). This day is also known as Red Dress Day with respect to Jaime Black\u2019s REDress art installation which helped inspire the red dress movement. On May 5, many people across North America hang red dresses in private and public spaces to remember those who are missing and murdered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">May 17: International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/may17.org\/\">International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia<\/a>&nbsp;draws attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex people, and all of those with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics. On this day, and every day, the Carleton community works to eliminate barriers and create an equitable and inclusive environment for all sexual orientations and gender identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Last week of May: National Accessibility Week (NAAW) <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aaact.canada.ca\/naaw\/\">National AccessAbility Week<\/a>&nbsp;(NAAW) is an opportunity to celebrate Canadians with disabilities and raise awareness of the critical need for accessibility and inclusion in&nbsp;our communities and workplaces. The following statement is Carleton\u2019s Commitment to Accessibility:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Carleton, we strive to be a leader in creating an inclusive, accessible community, where everyone has access and the opportunity to fully participate and thrive in all aspects of campus life. We acknowledge that not everything in our community is accessible and we are actively working on identifying and implementing accessibility solutions, preventing barriers through inclusive design and challenging ableism. We continue to foster a culture of accessibility where this commitment is a shared and valued responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"june\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">June<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Pride Month<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>June is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/celebrating-pride-month\/\">Pride Month<\/a>, an opportunity to celebrate and support 2-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer members of the Carleton community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton supports greater inclusion throughout all areas of campus life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">National Indigenous History Month <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/national-indigenous-history-month\/\">National Indigenous History Month<\/a>, Carleton celebrates the rich and diverse cultures, voices and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis people who are positively impacting the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton acknowledges the location of its campus on the traditional, unceded territories of the Algonquin nation. In doing so, we recognize the responsibility we have to the Algonquin people and to adhere to Algonquin cultural protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">June 18: International Day for Countering Hate Speech<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/countering-hate-speech\">International Day for Countering Hate Speech<\/a> is an opportunity to raise awareness of the risks posed by hate speech. This day serves as a crucial reminder for us to come together, reject divisiveness, and foster a culture of empathy, understanding, and respect for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">June 21: National Indigenous Peoples Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca\/eng\/1100100013718\/1534874583157\">National Indigenous Peoples Day<\/a>, Carleton celebrates the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For generations, many Indigenous peoples have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year. As a community, we come together to learn about the important history, culture and perspectives of Indigenous communities in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">June 27: Canadian Multiculturalism Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/celebrate-canada\/multiculturalism-day.html\">Canadian Multiculturalism Day<\/a> honours the many communities that help build a strong and vibrant Canadian society. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity that enriches us collectively and reaffirms our commitment to equity, inclusion, and mutual respect<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"august\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">August<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">August 1: Emancipation Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Canadians are not always aware that Black and Indigenous Peoples were once enslaved on the land that is now Canada. Those who fought enslavement were pivotal in shaping our society to be as diverse as it is today. On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/emancipation-day.html\">Emancipation Day<\/a>&nbsp;Canadians are invited to reflect, educate and engage in the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">August 22: International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/religious-based-violence-victims-day\">International Day Commemorating the Victims of Violence Based on Religion or Belief<\/a>&nbsp;is held every year on August 22. On this day, the Carleton community honours survivors and victims of religion-based violence as we commit to protecting everyone\u2019s right to freedom of religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"september\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">September<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Fourth week of the September: Gender Equality Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/women-gender-equality.canada.ca\/en\/commemorations-celebrations\/gender-equality-week.html\">Gender Equality Week<\/a> raises awareness of the important contributions of women and gender diverse people within the university community. On this day, and every day, Carleton celebrates the significant accomplishments that have been made in advancing gender equality and reconfirm our commitment to address persistent gender equality gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Sept. 30: Orange Shirt Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/orange-shirt-day\/\">Orange Shirt Day<\/a>, held annually on September 30, people from across Canada are encouraged to take time to meaningfully reflect on the harmful impact of residential schools and seek out opportunities toward reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton is committed to reconciliation, as outlined in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/kinamagawin\/\">Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin<\/a>, a revitalized long-term Indigenous strategy with 41 calls to action to make our university a more welcoming space for current and future Indigenous students and faculty members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sept. 30 also marks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/national-day-truth-reconciliation.html\">National Day for Truth and Reconciliation,<\/a>&nbsp;which honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"october\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">October<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Women&#8217;s Health Month<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>October is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/women-gender-equality.canada.ca\/en\/commemorations-celebrations\/womens-history-month.html\">Women\u2019s History Month<\/a>, a time to celebrate the women and girls from our past, and present who are contributing to a better, more inclusive university and country. As a community, we are working together to eliminate gender barriers, creating a university environment that is equitable, inclusive, and empowering to women\u2019s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Islamic History Month<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.islamichistorymonth.ca\/\">Islamic History Month<\/a> aims to celebrate, inform, educate, and share Muslim heritage and contributions to society. It is also a time to acknowledge the ongoing challenges and barriers that Muslim Canadians face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">October 4: National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.islamichistorymonth.ca\/\">Islamic History Month<\/a> aims to celebrate, inform, educate, and share Muslim heritage and contributions to society. It is also a time to acknowledge the ongoing challenges and barriers that Muslim Canadians face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">October 10: World Mental Health Day <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/world-mental-health-day\">World Mental Health Day<\/a> calls us to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. This day provides an opportunity to come together and promote the importance of mental health education, awareness, support, and advocacy against social stigma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"november\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">November<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">November 16: Louis Riel Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metisnation.org\/about-the-mno\/culture-heritage\/louis-riel-day\/\">Louis Riel Day<\/a>&nbsp;marks the anniversary of Riel\u2019s execution as he led Metis people in the Northwest Resistance; a group that stood against the Government of Canada for encroaching on Metis rights and ways-of-life. This day is an opportunity to remember the historical leader as well as celebrate the many contributions of the Metis People.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">November 20: Transgender Day of Remembrance<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-national-defence\/maple-leaf\/defence\/2024\/11\/transgender-day-remembrance-transgender-awareness-week-message-from-2slgbtqi-plus-defence-team-champions.html\">Transgender Day of Remembrance<\/a>, Carleton honors the memory of transgender people whose lives have been lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness regarding the persistent stigma and discrimination experienced by this community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">November 25: International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/ending-violence-against-women-day\">International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women<\/a>, is a day to mobilize all society to become activists for the prevention of violence against women; calling for global action to increase awareness, promote advocacy and create opportunities for discussion to end gender-based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">November 25 to December 10: 16 Days of Action to End Gender-Based Violence <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/16-days-of-activism\/\">16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence<\/a>&nbsp;is an annual international campaign that begins on November 25, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/ending-violence-against-women-day\">International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women<\/a>, and runs until December 10,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/human-rights-day\">Human Rights Day.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This period includes December 6,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/women-gender-equality.canada.ca\/en\/commemorations-celebrations\/16-days\/national-day-remembrance.html\">Canada\u2019s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women<\/a>&nbsp;(White Ribbon Day) which commemorates the 14 women killed in the horrific 1989 Montreal Polytechnique massacre<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton University is committed to ongoing learning and growing to deepen our understanding of gender-based violence through an intersectional lens and gaining skills to prevent, intervene and respond appropriately. Carleton aims to support and raise awareness of the issues that persons with disabilities face in all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">December 6: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/women-gender-equality\/commemorations-celebrations\/16-days\/national-day-remembrance.html\">December 6<\/a>, 1989, fourteen young women were murdered at Polytechnique Montr\u00e9al. Over 30 years later and we are still reckoning with the Canadian and global realities of gender-based violence, femicide, and misogyny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Carleton, we commemorate the 14 women killed and educate students about gender-based violence and the intersectional realities that put the most marginalized communities at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">December 10: Human Rights Day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/human-rights-day\">Human Rights Day<\/a> honours the date the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
