ESP Advising Bulletin

Main office closed but services continue online

Thank you for your patience as the university continues to respond to advice from public health officials. The safety and health of our students, staff and faculty is foremost in our minds as we plan these next steps.

There are still many questions, but here are the updates since our last email:

  • Effective immediately, all ESP/IESP offices on campus will be closed.
  • Though offices will closed, staff will be working from home and will provide services by email (esp@carleton.ca, iesp@carleton.ca and esp.advising@carleton.ca). If you wish to speak on the phone, please contact esp.advising@carleton.ca and we can arrange a phone appointment.
  • While the university itself remains open, many services are closed (such as Athletics and the Library), please see the university’s COVID-19 page for updates re: closures.

Advising appointments: updates

Advising will have to move online. You can also reach us at esp.advising@carleton.ca and if you would like to speak, please suggest some times that you are free and request a phone appointment, we will be happy to speak with you. Below is guidance on registering for summer courses, applying for your degree and course withdrawals – all can be done from home, if you wish.

Registering for summer courses: updates

Please see the summer information link below for details on summer course registration. We have to cancel our drop-in support, but you can register from home. Registration instructions are here: carleton.ca/summer/registration/. I will set up an online application form so that you can apply from home if you wish to take more than 1.0 credit. Watch for an email in the next day or two with details.

How to apply for your degree from home

The online application can be found in Carleton Central. Login, then in the Student Records section, select Internal Application for Admission. Click continue twice, then answer Yes.

Select your Applicant Type: Special

Select Degree: Click here and you will find the degree categories. An Honours degree is a 20-credit (4 year) program, a General degree 15-credit (3 year) program.

  • Select your degree, then a drop down menu of possible majors will appear (if applicable). For example, for a Psychology degree, select Bachelor of Arts Honours (or General), then you can select Psychology as your major.
  • Once you choose a major, a menu will appear to select a minor.  If you do not wish to declare a minor, just choose No minor. (You can choose one later in your studies, if you wish).
  • If co-op is an option for your program, they will ask if you wish to apply for co-op (usually admission to co-op programs requires a B average). Co-ops normally happen in third year and can be applied to later, if you wish.
  • Once you have completed your first selection, you’ll have the chance to enter a second choice.

On the next page you will be asked about any post-secondary studies. You do not have to enter Carleton studies. If you studied at another university or college, see if it is already listed. If not, you will have to add it and you’ll be charged a fee (this pays for the service of assessing your former studies to see whether you would be eligible for any transfer credit).

Enter any remaining information. Then you will be asked:

  • Is application complete? If you click yes, this sends your request to admissions services.  You can check on the status of your application at any point after that by logging into Carleton Central.
  • Then one more click to Accept and Submit Application.

Withdrawing from courses: updates

The deadline to withdraw from Winter or Fall-Winter courses is Tuesday, April 7. Please feel free to email an advisor to discuss your circumstances and the consequences of withdrawal.

Please do get in touch if you are concerned about your performance in a given course. It is generally much better to withdraw (which does not have negative consequences for your average) than to fail courses. Earning less than a D- average can lead to suspension from study at Carleton.

Withdrawing from classes will affect your eligibility to a degree and may affect OSAP. We can advise you about the degree aspects, the Awards office can advise you about OSAP.

You can withdraw from a course online through Carleton Central (as of March 15th, when your ESP/IESP registration hold expires). A video on how to drop a course can be found here: carleton.ca/registrar/registration/carleton-central-how-to-videos/.
