Financial support for those taking summer courses

Besides OSAP, there are a few additional funding options available to students who are enrolled in summer courses this year.

  1. Emergency Financial Assistance: Apply for the Student Emergency Fund for short-term support. This is designed to help with rent, tuition, travel costs or debts.
  2. Bursary: Students who are receiving government financial aid (OSAP or out of province funding, etc) for the summer term can apply for a bursary/grant. The application opens May 4 in Carleton Central. Here are instructions on “how to apply” (simply select “Summer 2020 instead of “Fall/Winter”).
  3. UPASS request: This summer, the UPASS will not be included with summer fees (most summers, students enrolled in 1.0 credit would receive, and be charged for, the UPASS – this summer that won’t be happening because everything is online). There is some support available to assist with purchasing an EquiPass in place of a UPASS if you require one. Complete the form here.

Financial support for those NOT taking summer courses

If you aren’t studying this summer and you didn’t make enough in recent months to qualify for CERB, here are some new government programs you should explore.

The application forms and details for each of these are still to come, but you can check for updates here under the Youth, post-secondary students and recent graduates heading.

  1. Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB): The CESB provides support of $1250 per month for eligible students, or up to $1750 of you have dependents or a disability.
  2. Canada Student Service Grant (CGSG): This is a national service initiative providing volunteer opportunities in the community this summer. It does not provide you money now, but you could earn up to $5000 toward your fall studies. More details on their I Want to Help platform coming soon.

The government also plans to increase the amount available through OSAP and other provincial student loan programs for Fall 2020. More details to come on these helpful initiatives.

Summer fees

The deadline to pay summer fees is technically May 7th, but this summer there will be no late fees.

  • Paying by OSAP? Watch your email for instructions on how to pay.
  • Online banking: You can pay through online banking by setting up “Carleton University” as a bill and using your student number as your account. You can make several smaller payments over the summer (as opposed to paying it all at once) if that’s easier.

The university has announce the following summer fees measures:

  • Due to the current COVID-19 situation, there will be no Video on Demand charges for the summer 2020 term.
  • The athletics fee is waived for the summer 2020 term.
  • The UPASS fee is waived for the summer 2020 term. Although there will be no UPASS provided to students, students who are registered in summer classes and are in need of a bus pass to access their essential services job, should complete the Student Emergency Fund In-Take Form.
  • The university is waiving late fee penalties for the summer term from May 1 to August 31 which allows you to pay your summer tuition fees over the summer months.
