ESP/IESP Advising Update: Flexible Grading Options

Flexible and Compassionate Grading options and ESP/IESP

Hello everyone,

I have had a number of inquiries about how the university’s new flexible grading options will affect students in ESP & IESP who are applying to degree programs. The short answer is, I don’t know yet.

The university’s administration will have an answer for all of us soon (within a week, I expect) and I will send everyone and update as soon as I know more.

Here’s what we do know:

  • This isn’t something you would apply for now. You can apply to convert a letter grade to “SAT” after grades have been released (beginning April 13 until May 29, 2020). Once the change is made it cannot be reversed.
    • That also means there’s time for us to figure out whether this is something that would help you to qualify for a degree (or not).
  • Important to note: any failing grade (F) will automatically be converted to an “UNS” grade by the Registrar after May 29.
  • SAT/UNS grades are not used in the calculation of a CGPA.
  • If you apply to have your grade changed to “SAT”, the university will still keep the original grade on file if it is needed for “other purposes”.
    • The example the university gave is using the original grade to enforce a prerequisite for the next course. For example, to take second year COMP courses, you need a minimum grade of C- in COMP 1006. Most majors don’t use that rule, but some do – see the calendar to check second year course prerequisites in your field of interest.
    • We don’t know if admissions decisions will still use your original grade – that might be one of the “other purposes”, so please stay tuned.

Do your best to finish the year strong so that you are in the best possible position. Good luck everyone!
