Advice from Julia:

“My notetaking approach is entirely dependent on the type of course I’m taking. Each category is different.

More math-based courses are purely pencil and paper based. I take down notes by hand as best as I can from each lecture, filling in details/extras on the side or in diagrams with many colourful pens for extra association. This is helpful as writing by hand is shown to be more effective for memory and it’s difficult to be fast at this type of note-taking on a computer.

In more purely Computer Science-based classes, I often type up my notes in the given lecture PDFs. This is helpful for convenience, highlighting, pictures, and the lectures profs give. I’m faster at word typing and there are fewer calculations to jot down. It’s also more convenient for commands, key-terms, and other concept-heavy work.”
