With each of your Elective Courses, you will also attend a weekly ESP Workshop. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/esp\/esp-student-guide\/\">Student Guide<\/a> for information about Workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the steps below for detailed instructions on how to complete your ESP course selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"registration-steps-arts-and-social-science-stream\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Registration Steps: Arts and Social Science Stream<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"1-familiarize-yourself-with-our-course-offerings\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">1. Familiarize yourself with our course offerings<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the dropdown menus below to read about which <a href=\"#FYSM\" type=\"internal\" id=\"#FYSM\">First-Year Seminars<\/a> and <a href=\"#Elective\" type=\"internal\" id=\"#Elective\">Elective courses<\/a> we will be offering this year. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For each course you&#8217;ll find a course description, instructor name, course time, workshop time and tutorial time (if applicable).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Electives courses<\/strong> are paired; each pair contains a fall course and a winter course. For example, if you want to take Anthropology 1001 in the fall, you will also take Anthropology 1002 in the winter because the courses are paired. Each semester you&#8217;ll take two electives, so you&#8217;ll need to choose 2 elective pairs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">First-Year Seminars (FYSM)<\/strong> run in both the fall and winter semester, so you&#8217;ll be registered in one FYSM from September to April. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"2-plan-your-schedule\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">2. Plan your schedule <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using the course information below build three schedule options (each schedule choice will consist of <strong>two elective<\/strong> <strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">pairs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/esp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/Blank-Timetable-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blank Timetable<\/a> to help you create a possible schedule. It&#8217;s important that the times of your courses don&#8217;t conflict, as our course selection form won&#8217;t allow you to build a schedule with course times that interfere with each other. Make sure to consider the days and times of all elements of your schedule: elective course and workshop time, FYSM time and tutorial times. Submit the online<\/strong> <strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\"><\/strong><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">course selection form<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the <a href=\"#courseform\">course selection form<\/a> to create three schedule options. We will do our best to give you your first choices, but since registration is dependent on course availability, we also require you to submit two backup schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Steps for completing your online course selection form:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For <strong>Elective Pair A<\/strong> use the dropdown menu to select the courses you are the most interested in taking. For Elective Pair A you&#8217;ll be able to pick from all of our courses. Each pair includes a fall-term and a winter-term course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After you select your Elective Pair A, use the dropdown menu to select <strong>Elective Pair B<\/strong>. You&#8217;ll notice that not all elective courses will be shown in this dropdown. This is because you will only be shown courses that do not conflict with your Elective Pair A choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat these steps to create three distinct schedules. If you are interested in international issues, this seminar is for you! We will explore global issues affecting all of our lives and dig into the history that led to where we are today. The course will cover: colonization, slavery, industrialization, agricultural modernization, structural adjustment, free trade and globalization. We will explore current issues affected by this history through the lens of systems thinking and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). This approach will allow us to look at aspirational collective goals and tackle aspects of issues such as inequality, power, knowledge, food, water, climate change and biodiversity. In class, we will engage in many activities and discussions together where students will be invited to ask questions, share perspectives with each other, consider multiple perspectives on an issue and reflect on their learnings. There will be several short writing assignments, quizzes on readings, a news journal and presentation about an issue you are passionate about . It is tied into and affects so many things like motivation, self-control, emotions, time management, stress, anxiety, distractions, goal setting, self-identity, learning, and academic success. It is a beast and you need to attack it head-on because university is procrastination\u2019s playground. Another thing that can mess things up for many students are ineffective learning\/study methods. Therefore, we are going to look at some powerful research and theory related to learning and memory, with the aim of helping you develop more effective study\/learning methods that have been demonstrated to boost grades, in many cases substantially. So, that\u2019s the course in a nutshell \u2014 it is a psychology course about motivation, learning, academic success and killing procrastination (or at least taming it). My final words \u2014 if you can solve your procrastination puzzle and put in some decent effort then everything else should fall into place, and university will become YOUR playground. If you\u2019ve ever wondered how to make sense of what\u2019s happening in Canada, this course is for you. We\u2019ll ask big questions: What counts as a social problem? Who benefits, and who gets pushed to the margins? Why do certain injustices persist?
