You can book an online appointment: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/esp\/appointments\">carleton.ca\/esp\/appointments<\/a> and select &#8220;Advising&#8221; or email us at <a href=\"mailto:esp.advising@carleton.ca\">esp.advising@carleton.ca<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-many-courses-can-i-take\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"courseload\"><\/a>How many courses can I take?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Degree students can normally take up to 2.0 credits in the summer. As ESP students, you can <em>apply<\/em> to do the same. The criteria are listed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>To take 1.0 credit you need to be eligible to enroll&nbsp;(i.e. not suspended from study)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>To take 1.5 credits you must be in good standing as a student, i.e., \u201cEligible to Continue\u201d (normally a D+ average or higher)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>To take 2.0 credits you&#8217;ll need to be admissible to a degree (normally C+ average)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You must apply for a course increase if you want to take more than 1.0 credit. Decisions made prior to final grades will be conditional and course loads will be adjusted if your CGPA drops below the requirements. <strong><em>You must complete this online form to qualify to increase your course load.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/esp\/application-for-esp-students-to-increase-summer-course-load\/\">Apply to increase summer course load<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"when-can-i-register-for-summer-courses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"registration\"><\/a>When can I register for summer courses?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ESP student summer registration begins<strong> March 2<\/strong><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">3<\/strong>. You can access the registration system yourself using Carleton Central at <a href=\"http:\/\/central.carleton.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>central.carleton.ca.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-do-i-register\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I register?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Summer course offering are available for viewing on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/central.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">central.carleton.ca<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/central.carleton.ca\/prod\/bwysched.p_select_term?wsea_code=EXT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Class Schedule<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Decide how many courses you want to take:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your default course load is 1.0 credit (part-time);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/esp\/application-for-esp-students-to-increase-summer-course-load\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Apply to<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>increase your course load<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to full-time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build a draft timetable in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/central.carleton.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton Central<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check out this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0JGR_eDT5yE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">handy video<\/a>&nbsp;on how to build a draft time table.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check&nbsp;if you have any registration holds.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your ESP registration hold should expire on March 15th.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have unpaid fees, you may have a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentaccounts\/tuition-fees\/financial-holds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial hold<\/a>&nbsp;that prevents registration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Register. There are registration related how-to videos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCECrC7x9V1zLi_qdEHEzf-Q\/videos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make an <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/esp\/appointments\/\">advising appointment<\/a> for assistance if needed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You can choose from any of the course offerings at Carleton, provided you meet the prerequisite or other registration requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, some courses are restricted to students in the program (common in programs like Journalism, Engineering, Architecture, Business, and Industrial Design) or to students with second year standing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the course description for restrictions. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes you can ask for permission to take a course (through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yWo_IGIEpVE\">Course Override Request<\/a> form in Carleton Central). Completing the form will send your request to the department offering the course. They will review it and let you know whether they can grant you access to the course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Important registration, payment and withdrawal dates and deadlines can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/students.carleton.ca\/academic-dates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"withdrawal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"withdrawal\"><\/a>Withdrawal<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Because your registration holds are not active during the summer, you are responsible for withdrawing yourself from a class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> How to drop a class:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8pSw_OEtBNE?si=K_LGDa9I8ZsXgnZp\">This video<\/a> shows you the steps to drop a class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Withdrawal deadlines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note there are different deadlines that apply depending on when the course is offered: <strong>early<\/strong> summer (May-June), <strong>full<\/strong> summer (May-Aug) or <strong>late<\/strong> summer (July-Aug). Read the withdrawal deadline information carefully as these dates are not flexible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>May 20: deadline to withdraw from <strong>early<\/strong> summer courses (those offered May-June) and receive a fee adjustment (i.e. have the fees cancelled)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>May 31:&nbsp;deadline to withdraw from <b>full <\/b>summer courses (those offered May-Aug) and receive a fee adjustment (i.e. have the fees cancelled)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>June 1: final deadline to withdraw from <strong>early<\/strong> summer courses with no fee adjustment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>July 15: deadline to withdraw from <b>late <\/b>summer courses (those offered July-Aug) and receive a fee adjustment (i.e. have the fees cancelled)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aug 1: final deadline to withdraw from <strong>late<\/strong> and <b>full <\/b>summer courses (those offered Jul-Aug and May-Aug) with no fee adjustment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"when-do-summer-courses-start\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"dates\"><\/a>When do summer courses start?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The summer session is divided into two 6-week terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Early Summer:<\/strong> Week of May 6 to June 18 (Exams: June 21-27)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Late Summer<\/strong>: Week of July 2 to August 14 (Exams: August 17-23)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Half-credit courses are usually offered in one term, and full credit courses normally span both terms, starting in May and ending in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"summer-courses-costs-funding\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"costs\"><\/a>Summer courses costs &amp; funding<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A half-credit course costs an estimated $680 (fees will be finalized in late spring). If you take 1.0 credit or more, you are normally charged the summer UPASS fee (approx. $240) as well as tuition. If you only take online courses this summer you should be able to opt-out of the UPASS. For more information on this visit <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/upass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carleton.ca\/upass\/<\/a>. See the fee estimator <a href=\"https:\/\/central.carleton.ca\/prod\/pkg_online_fee_assess.p_main\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> and payment deadlines <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentaccounts\/dates-deadlines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>April 25:<\/strong> Deadline to pay summer fees, unless you have an OSAP deferral. OSAP entitlements must be available by this date in order to be eligible for the OSAP deferral, so get your application submitted quickly to avoid late charges. You can check in Carleton Central under &gt;Calculate Amount to Pay to confirm whether you have been granted this deferral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentaccounts\/fee-payment\/\">the Student Accounts website<\/a>&nbsp;for important payment information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentaccounts\/tuition-fees\/late-charges\/\">Late payment&nbsp;charges and late registration charges<\/a> apply to the student account on or after this date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summer 2025 late fees were $27.00 per course up to 1.5 credits, or $131.00, if you&#8217;re registered in 2.0 credits. See updates <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentaccounts\/tuition-fees\/late-charges\/\">here<\/a> when available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"summer-bursaries\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"bursary\"><\/a>Summer bursaries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apply for a bursary to help with summer fees. Bursaries are awards based on financial need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer bursary applications opens May 2. Learn more about bursaries and how to apply <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/awards\/bursaries\/\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-if-i-need-summer-osap\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"osap\"><\/a>What if I need summer OSAP?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/awards\/osap\/summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Full-time funding<\/strong><\/a> is available to those taking <strong>a minimum of 1.5<\/strong> credits over the entire summer.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full-time funding normally covers books, tuition and some living expenses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To apply for <em>full-time<\/em> OSAP funding, you need to fill out a new <a href=\"https:\/\/osap.gov.on.ca\/OSAPSecurityWeb\/public\/login.xhtml?lang=en\">2025-2026 OSAP application<\/a> (it&#8217;s still part of <em>the current<\/em> academic year).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See the Awards office website for a good <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/awards\/summer-applying-for-full-time-osap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">full-time &#8220;how-to&#8221; guide<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;<i>&nbsp;<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/awards\/part-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Part-time<\/strong><\/a> funding may be available to students enrolled in fewer than 1.5 credits (if you take 0.5 or 1.0 credit).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Part-time funding normally only covers the cost of tuition and books.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To apply for <em>part-time<\/em> OSAP, visit the OSAP website at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osap.gov.on.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.osap.gov.on.ca.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See the Awards office website for a good <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/awards\/summer-applying-for-part-time-osap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">part-time OSAP &#8220;how-to&#8221; guide.&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><em> &nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students with disabilities may be considered for full-time funding with a reduced course load (1.0 credit); please contact <a href=\"mailto:awards@carleton.ca\">Awards<\/a> or 613-520-3600 with inquiries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"im-not-in-ottawa-for-the-summer-can-i-take-a-course\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"distance\"><\/a>I&#8217;m not in Ottawa for the summer. Can I take a course?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. Some summer courses will be offered online. Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/central.carleton.ca\/prod\/bwysched.p_select_term?wsea_code=EXT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Course listings<\/a> for details on the delivery method &#8211; under the &#8220;Special Criteria&#8221; heading, you can select &#8220;Show online courses&#8221; to filter your search results. Tip: If you type just the number 1 in the Course Number box, it will only show first year course offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-to-succeed-in-summer-courses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"challenges\"><\/a>How to succeed in<strong> summer courses<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Summer courses are delivered in just half the time allotted to courses during the academic year.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That means that weekly lecture hours are doubled, reading loads are twice as heavy, assignments are due quickly, and then suddenly it&#8217;s the exam period!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This pace can be challenging, especially for students who are trying to balance academic work with the demands of a summer job or responsibilities at home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure to balance work and school &#8211; don&#8217;t try to do both full-time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re taking online courses, they have their own challenges.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check out the online resources and tips at <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carleton.ca\/online<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider taking a course with a friend or two and (virtually) watching the course together at a specific time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A buddy system can help keep you accountable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-are-the-benefits-of-summer-courses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"benefits\"><\/a>What are the benefits of summer courses?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completing a summer course brings you another step closer to the eventual completion of your degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some students take a summer course as part of their plan for a reduced course load during the academic year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes completing a credit in the summer will change your status from first year to second year (once you have completed 4.0 credits, you will be eligible for second year status).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, if you don&#8217;t achieve the average required for admission, taking a summer course could help.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you want to try to improve your average in the summer, we recommend an <strong>Early Summer term<\/strong> course that ends in June.
