id=\"PhD_Ethics_and_Public_Affairs\">Ph.D. Ethics and Public Affairs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"ph-d-how-it-works\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ph.D.: How it works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The PhD program<\/strong>&nbsp;can be completed in four years, beginning with two terms of coursework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Core seminars EPAF 6100 and 6200 explore the nature and requirements of public reason, in application to policy issues in national and global contexts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EPAF 6000 is a year-long workshop course in which students develop their research topics by identifying a possible research question, relevant ethical or political theories and concepts, and core literature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A graduate course relevant to the student\u2019s research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A graduate course in social science methods, if necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The next four terms lead from comprehensive exams to a thesis proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Comprehensive examination on ethical theory, social\/political philosophy, and theories of public reason.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comprehensive examination or review essay on literature relevant to the student\u2019s thesis topic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thesis proposal, with oral defence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practicum experience in a workplace where ethical analysis is relevant (can also be done later).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optional course on ethics in organizations (can also be done later).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The remainder of the program focuses on thesis research and
