The Jean Monnet Chair EUREAST is pleased to host a research seminar on the Eastern Neighborhood Partnership (ENP) with Joan DeBardeleben and visiting scholars: Maryna Rabinovych<\/a> (University of Hamburg), Diana Potjomkina<\/a> (United Nations University), and Ionela Ciolan<\/a> (Bucharest National University of Political Studies and Public Administration).<\/p>\n

Research seminars are geared towards doctoral students and their supervisors, as well as EURUS MA students and graduate students in general interested in the research.<\/p>\n

Pursuant to 2018 Munich Security Report, the signs of a \u201ccontinued erosion\u201d of the international liberal order represent a crucial threat for global security. Between Brexit, rise of nationalism and contestation of common values inside the EU (Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy), turmoil in the Neighborhood and extreme politicization of trade agreements, the Union is facing a plethora of worrying \u201csymptoms\u201d. However, these illiberal challenges are not only a product of the last few years but rather an iteration of long-standing European integration issues that have been on the agenda since the adoption of the Maastricht Treaty. This panel aims to trace how exactly the \u201cold\u201d European integration issues have given rise to the current illiberal tendencies. The discussion starts with analyzing the ways to conceptualize, predict and responsibilize the crisis of the international liberal order. Afterwards, the panel will demonstrate how the imperfections of the EU\u2019s development policy, EU\u2019s (un)accountable trade consultations and the EU-Russia power struggle over the Eastern Neighborhood gradually resulted in illiberal contestation of the EU governance, with each paper suggesting three policy recommendations on what can be done at the present stage.<\/p>\n
