Location:Room 234, second floor Tory Building

EURUS is pleased to present a public lecture, “Antigone’s Ghosts: The Long Legacy of War and Genocide in Germany, Japan, Spain, Yugoslavia, and Turkey,” by Dr. Mark Wolfgram, Oklahoma State University and currently a EURUS Visiting Scholar.

Abstract: States and societies vary in how they deal with the legacy of war and genocide. To understand these different responses, we need to engage in both political and cultural analysis.  This lecture, based on a recently completed book manuscript, will look at these dynamics in Germany, Japan, Spain, Yugoslavia and Turkey over the course of the twentieth-century.

Biography: Dr. Wolfgram has a long-standing research interest in the social aspects of memory.  He published “Getting History Right”: East and West German Collective Memories of the Holocaust and War (Bucknell University Press, 2011).  He is a member of the international steering committee for the Historical Dialogues, Justice and Memory Network, which works with Columbia University to organize an annual international conference.
